That Dortmund win is a very uplifting result. In a world of despotic oil states masquerading as respectable investors, it's lovely to see an authentic club that represents its locale triumph against the odds. It's amazing to say it, but when a truly massive club like Borussia Dortmund - the club with the highest average attendances in Europe for the best part of two decades now - is an underdog, it shows you how corrupt the game is.
Some people like to ridicule the Bundesliga, but I've no doubt it is the best league in the world in terms of getting the balance right between footballing excellence, local authenticity, and a fan-centred culture. The Germans could change their ownership rules, get rid of the 50+1 rule and become by far the biggest league in the world overnight given the size and sheer number of big clubs in the richest big country in Europe - dominating continental football as a result - but it seems that they are doing that anyway without having to sell their souls. Dortmund in the final, Bayern in with a shout, and Leverkusen demolishing all-comers. They might even have a national team worth cheering next month.
