IMO this is sommat which needs addressing.

It is quite one thing the runner up in the Cup Final getting an EL place if they are beaten by the Champions.

It is a whole nother thing giving the spot to a team which has been beaten by the team which finished 4th in the league.

Unless the Champions have just completed the Double, then the runner up should not be given a European spot.

the counter argument would surly mean that you are then gonna reward a team for finishing 7th

You would but that isn't really the point.

The point is there is no distinction made between finishing 1st and finishing 4th and I think that is the basic flaw in the CL qualification as it stands now,

It is almost like the top four have become joint winners of the EPL.

Hence Arsenal's mediocrity has become a bench mark for "success".

I think the time will come when the top four will have a play off for the Title.

But at the moment it is just plain ridiculous that a European place is given to a team which has been beaten in a final by a team which finished anywhere between 12 and 18 points behind the Champions (the average over the past six years is around 14 points) IMO.

that was the weekend we beat Blackpool 5-3, with Saha scoring 4.

Weirdly, in the 2nd highest scoring weekend of Premier League football ever, we drew 0-0 with Chelsea

Always thought it stupid as well, (non champs being in the CL), but once the cash started rolling when they first got mega sponsors, they had to ensure as many of the European elite clubs were represented, so the sponsors got their money worth.

And as the elite generally come from 4 leagues, those leagues all get 3 or 4 places.

Pretty sure the only CL team from say Iceland would be the champions only.
 
  • Associations 1–3 each have four teams qualify.
  • Associations 4–6 each have three teams qualify.
  • Associations 7–15 each have two teams qualify.
  • Associations 16–53 (except Liechtenstein) each have one team qualify.

Chelsea finished 6th. Newcastle finished 5th. We finished 7th.

Liverpool in 8th get a europa place for winning the europa, both fa cup finalists (liverpool are chelsea are already in europe).

The 2 remaining europa place go to spurs and newcastle, with chelsea in 6th taking the 4th cl place.

If this means england get an extra place in europe, everton in 7th should be getting it.

We were robbed, is my point.
