I am not sure what people expect from squad fillers...

I don't have any major issues with him, but I don't expect a world beater..

Forgetting the exorbitant wage that he's being paid to do next to nothing, I don't see the benefit in having players on the books that couldn't reasonably be expected to come in and offer more than an academy product.

He is a Stoke/Sunderland/Palace player, after a good run of games in his preferred position he will be a solid prem player, like your Chris Brunt, McArthur, McLean types.
Everton was a terrible move for him, don't think he's ever had a run of games in one position, and left wing/left mid/attacking mid/centre mid all at the same time in the same game like Roberto tried him and Kone in doesn't count.

Unsurprisingly given our recent history we are a club full of dependable , solid premiership midfielders. We need some players who make things happen in midfield . Gana is a good start.

Also academy players are not always ready and lack experience
