While i can see your point and agree in some ways, on this part I do, and he isnt very good.

I would like him to do well, being local and that but just cant see it
That's fair enough. I wasn't pulling you up on that.

Personally I'd have expected him to kick on a lot more than he has over the last 2 years. I'm not in the camp that think he needs more game time though. I think he needs coaching and the chance to play with and learn from players like Gomes. He's a bit of an all rounder too so is ideal to stay with us and take a place on the bench. At 20, I haven't given up on him yet. But he does need to start showing more of the promise evidenced in his breakthrough season.

Its an odd one with Tom isnt it? Like he seems a really nice, pretty grounded lad, doing stuff lads his age do. And when he first broke through he looked the part, his run and goal against City being the obvious reference point.

Then there were the stories of him being asked to train/fill in for someone, in the full England team in training. So far, so good.

But to use the race horse term, he hasnt really trained on has he? I cant recall every single young player on the planet, but I would guess that other than a tiny elite, most do not have a straight line progression graph. Doesnt mean he has failed, yet, but the next 18 months will deffo be make or break at Everton. Being very generous, time frame based.
As I mentioned maybe it’s the succession of managers we’ve had that has stalled his progress. But looking at our midfield Gana, Gomes, siguardsson, you’d struggle to see him replacing any of those.

He needs to get away from Everton to progress as a player. We have a large portion of our fanbase that hate his guts and have done for about a year now who will never want him to succeed, because he’s committed the crime of not being Ross Barkley. Any young midfielder coming through after him would’ve suffered the same fate.

Didnt realise that. He gets plenty of clog on here, but didnt know that the real world dislike him as well. Shame.

I really want the lad to succeed I really do, as I want all our players if I’m honest. But he hasn’t kicked in from that Koeman’s final full season with us. Yes there has been a number of different managers and tactics during that time that might have hindered his development, but this season is massive for him if he wishes to kick and carve out a career with us as an established premier league player.
Yeah I fully agree mate. I just don't get all the crap on here over his off the field activities. He's not exactly going round getting knocked out in night clubs is he. If he was he'd probably be more highly thought of by some.

I don’t think anybody wants him to fail, its accepted he hasn’t had much continuity with managers but fact is, he hasn’t been very good bar a few games. He needs to show more this year to give people hope he can develop sufficiently over the next couple of years to command a starting position in the team. Otherwise he will be another player who will fade away.

Agree with that tbh. The problem I have is with the absolute venom directed at him for no reason.

Our midfield has been pretty terrible since Martinez 1st season, and don't think we've had a good consistent line up in that time either. We certainly haven't had what I would consider a true 1st choice midfield that picks itself the way most of the top teams do.

In that period, which is only 5 seasons, we have had

Barry
Mccarthy
Barkley
Naismith
Gibson
Besic
Osman
Mirallas
Oviedo
Mcgeady
Lennon
Atsu
Cleverley
Deulofeu
Davies
Dowell
Gueye
Bolasie
Schneiderlin
Lookman
Rooney
Sigurdsson
Klaasen
Vlasic
Baningime
Walcott
Bernard
Richarlison
Gomes

Not sure if I've missed anyone out there, but that's 29 midfield (including wingers) players in 4 seasons. That's a huge turnover and we've barely had a consistent run with any of them, much less a consistent run with us playing well. The best period was probably in the 2nd half of Koemans 1st season, when Gueye was at the AFCON and Davies and Schneiderlin were paired together. The other was probably the last 10 games of this season, when oddly enough, Schneiderlin came into some sort of form that had eluded him since that previous spell. Make of that what you will.

I also think, despite lots of people pointing out how important and irreplaceable certain players are, notably Gueye and Siguurdsson because of their superior stats, that our midfield is generally pretty poor. On a good day, we are capable of turning out a decent performance, but they seem to be few and far between, and the midfield as a whole, as a unit, is less than the apparent sum of its parts.

Considering we supposedly have the best DM and the 1 of the best AM in the league, based on stats mind, our team is frighteningly average. With the 3rd part of that midfield trio being our latest permanent signing, and someone most of us were desperate to buy, it's certainly a head scratcher as to how we aren't bossing games left, right and centre with a midfield that boasts such apparent talent. But I digress.

Tom Davies is a talented young player for whom too much is being expected too soon, especially when our senior and so called best players fail to lead by example the way any true leader in any half decent team would be expected to do.

A loan out to a good progressive side would probably be great way for him to develop.

If he wasn’t from Liverpool, he wouldn’t have got a new deal. I think a loan away from the club would be best. He isn’t a starter when everyone is fit.
Two year loan to Leeds please with no recall clause within the first 18 months and an option for them to buy for 5m at any time.

That'd do nicely.
