Tragic deaths in Mossley Hill

I live right round the corner near Penny Lane and I couldn’t believe it when I saw the news of this yesterday evening. Absolutely terrible.

That spot under the bridge regularly floods when there’s heavy rain (it was biblical Saturday night) and plenty of times over the years have cars been stuck and been abandoned. Not even sure what can be done to prevent it from flooding, it’s like a basin.

Couldn't they climb out the windows? I'm hella confused. Still tragic of course just don't get it.
I know what you mean. I have seen that area flood many times and on those occasions it would seem that you would just get out the car and wade to safety. This time it appears the water was very deep possibly submerging the car. Clip here

Ah that adds more context. How far in did they get though? Or maybe it wasn't that deep till they were halfway and then it just really upped its game.

Possibly was not too bad and they tried to pass but got stuck and then the water rose rapidly?

Electric windows bail out in the water? and you can't push open the door due to weight / pressure of water.
I've been in that situation in water 4inches below the window and you can't push the door.

Edit; the water got into the air filter flow sensor, engine died, had to be towed out, took 2 hrs to dry it out and my door speakers and amp were cabbaged

When I was a teenager, kids would regularly swim in that flooded area for a dare.

From memory, the deepest I`ve ever seen it was waist high and I can`t get my head around someone drowning in a car there tbh.

Stay calm til the cab fills, take a deep breath open the door.

For your safety though, modern cars auto lock as you drive off. Then if the leccy shorts out the pull handle won't auto-unlock so you can't open the doors or windows at which point most people would understandably panic, rather than try to reach for the manual unlock.

Absolutely horrific that this situation should happen in what, the fifth richest nation on the planet. Civil engineers to blame?

Yeah seems confusing how this has actually happened.
My only thought is that if the car has filled up with water quickly and they’ve panicked not being able to get the door open and drowned. It can happen very quickly if you are panicking.

Can’t see any mention of their age on the article, but if they were an elderly couple that could make matters worse.

Tragic.

There is a picture of the unfortunate couple in the Red Echo. Seem elderly to me

It can get deceivingly deep there when it floods, which it does every few years at best, because the incline is quite steep. It's got to 4ft - 5ft quite often.

Yet, the water got to 15ft, apparently! The big problem is that it's sat right below the railway, which acts as a drainage route for Mossley Hill, which is a high point.

When they dug it back in the 20s (I think), the drains weren't built to a standard to absorb the torrent of rain that can end up in the hole.

At a very minimum, they need to put signs up to tell people to not pass if there's water.
