Tragic deaths in Mossley Hill

It can get deceivingly deep there when it floods, which it does every few years at best, because the incline is quite steep. It's got to 4ft - 5ft quite often.

Yet, the water got to 15ft, apparently! The big problem is that it's sat right below the railway, which acts as a drainage route for Mossley Hill, which is a high point.

When they dug it back in the 20s (I think), the drains weren't built to a standard to absorb the torrent of rain that can end up in the hole.

At a very minimum, they need to put signs up to tell people to not pass if there's water.

There must be rain sensing technology...maybe Similar to the technology that operates level crossing gates.
In fact put those gates there and have them down when it floods

Edit 2; signs won't help, people disregard them

What`s 100% making things much much worse, is that the council seem to have completely stopped unblocking and maintaining the grids.

Virtually every grid by us is blocked, to the point that some of them have weeds growing out of them.

The rain water just rolls down hill now and ends up at it`s lowest point, where is causes a massive flood.

Know the area well and have never seen it like that before.
As said above, waist high is the norm there. That footage is scary. It's like a river has burst its banks. They wouldn't have stood a chance in that. So sad.

Deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the couple that died.
RIP

Electric windows bail out in the water? and you can't push open the door due to weight / pressure of water.
I've been in that situation in water 4inches below the window and you can't push the door.

Edit; the water got into the air filter flow sensor, engine died, had to be towed out, took 2 hrs to dry it out and my door speakers and amp were cabbaged
Yeah, apparently if you're ever going to end up under water in a car you're supposed to try and get windows down and let the car flood first - (goes against all natural instinct obviously) and that's if you get a chance to do so. Only way you're getting them doors open is if the pressure is the same on the inside as on the out.

Poor couple, what a tragedy.

Time to put up a water depth indicator if they haven't got one already. I can't stress enough driving through just a couple of feet of water isn't advisable unless your vehicle is modified to do so. At best you'll end up with a bill to replace a bumper or other body part that has been ripped off or going the other way a new engine. These people paid the ultimate price for not finding another route which is such a waste.
