Just had a look. Yeah, look to be an older couple, possible that it happened so fast that they were overwhelmed. There is a picture of the unfortunate couple in the Red Echo. Seem elderly to me

It can get deceivingly deep there when it floods, which it does every few years at best, because the incline is quite steep. It's got to 4ft - 5ft quite often.
Yet, the water got to 15ft, apparently! The big problem is that it's sat right below the railway, which acts as a drainage route for Mossley Hill, which is a high point.
When they dug it back in the 20s (I think), the drains weren't built to a standard to absorb the torrent of rain that can end up in the hole.
At a very minimum, they need to put signs up to tell people to not pass if there's water.

My old neighbourhood that. Insane they haven't done anything to solve that problem in 25 years,
It`s longer than that mate.
Kids were swimming in it, well over 30 yrs ago.
Yeah, apparently if you're ever going to end up under water in a car you're supposed to try and get windows down and let the car flood first - (goes against all natural instinct obviously) and that's if you get a chance to do so. Only way you're getting them doors open is if the pressure is the same on the inside as on the out.Electric windows bail out in the water? and you can't push open the door due to weight / pressure of water.
I've been in that situation in water 4inches below the window and you can't push the door.
Edit; the water got into the air filter flow sensor, engine died, had to be towed out, took 2 hrs to dry it out and my door speakers and amp were cabbaged
Similar to my parents.Couple in their 70's, due to celebrate 54 years married next week.
