Trophies or Stablity?

Stability that leads to a trophy at best. We should be challenging for Europe every season in a few years. But need patience for that.
Challenging for Europe really shouldn’t take that long to be honest. I’ll be disappointed if we’re not challenging for Europe next season. It might take a while before we expect Europe, but knocking around the bottom of the top half should be the least we expect if we actually get some investment in the squad.

100% mate. The situation Moyes inherited is very similar to 2002, and his results are similar (well actually better). He will have a lot more financial support than 2002, but won't have a Wayne Rooney coming into the team. The following season though he got 63 points. Which is Europe.

I'm not saying we definitely do it but it's not some wild things to think it's done. The league now basically has 13 and if you add Wolves in 14 teams that I would loosely define as decent mid tableish teams.

Im delighted for Forest this year, they've done brilliantly, but nobody can say they were ahead of where we are now saying 12 months ago. But it's a bit of a streaky league and you can get on a bit of a role currently.

What Is also say, is under Moyes we probably had about 8 seasons in a row, where we would finish on the top 7 and the European places. That's very much his bread and butter. There's a lot of other questions about whether he can take teams further, but he's very good at that.

What's going to be interesting is can 1 or 2 of the sides between say 4th-16th pull away from the pack. Can a Bournemouth or a Brighton keep that trajectory going, or say a Villa/Newcastle put their foot down like.

Stability to win trophies. Call it upward stability if you want.

I would dearly love to see us winning something again, a league cup or conference league I'd gladly take either of them. That shouldn't be a pipe dream. Maybe bigger trophies might be.

Absolutely both. Time to get ruthless with our squad and plan for the future. Start with the feeder club link ups. Buy young talent from everywhere, send them to Belgium or the like to get the work permits then integrate or sell depending on the player's progress. Forest had a massive overhaul and it worked well for them. Who had heard of Aina, Murillo, Milenkovic, Sels etc before they arrived. They've taken squad players like Wood, Anderson, Gibbs-White, Williams, Elanga, Hudson Odoi etc and turned them into 1st team players. Smart investment and a definitive plan for recruitment based on a style of play is what's needed and christ, I think we deserve it after what we've suffered for the past few years....

Where we are ATM get better Stability - aim for Europe attract top players & trophies will follow ..... It can happen quickly - also getting some youth in the team & not letting them go to the surrounding vultures - we have rich owners now = no excuse ......

Our efforts in the League Cup have been an absolute disgrace all my life tbh.

Newcastle targeted it properly and won it in 3 years.
We could not win the League cup in the two eras we were the top team - the big clubs play youth players & think it's good enough - it devalues the competition, ala like the FA CUP - I bet the other lot wish they had not put kids out in the FA CUP now :D -

To win the double years back was a major achievement.... FA CUP & The League - Spurs did it in 1961 /62 season & have not won a title since .....

Those rare cases aside, stability brings trophies. If you think Evertons lofties goal is to win 1 trophy in the next 10 years, then take that. But if you think the goal is higher than that, take stability, so you can win a bunch of trophies.

Improve the quality of the squad and the trophy will come, simple as that for me. Keep putting ourselves in the conversation and it will happen eventually when we get a lucky draw or find a team on an off day (like Newcastle did) or just play very well (like we did in 95)

Everton’s best periods in the PL under Moyes and Martinez coincided with our best trophy runs post 95. Cup final in 09 and semi final in 2012. Two semi finals in 15/16. It’s no coincidence to me that when we had our best squads we went deeper in the cups

Keep improving the squad, take the cups seriously every year, get back into European competition for an additional opportunity, and the trophy will come. It took Klopp 4 seasons with Liverpool to get over the line. How much further under the Friedkins might we be in 4 seasons?

….this really isn’t an ‘either or’.
Agreed, but surely it's a kinda ladder, and the questions are how fast do we expect to climb it, will we tolerate the odd downward step, and how do we react if we plateau at some point? Ditching a manager (whomever he may be) in a quest for continuous upward movement, always risks downward, just like after Moyes 1. I have no clue what the answers are to any of this stuff, but I do think that those are the questions.

Lot of clubs in a similar situation, despite how the loveables may portray our drought.
