TV Series

It's a weird one with anime. Think more than anything it's just a culture thing.

Anything Western like a Disney film or a comedy show with mature themes (The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bojack Horseman etc.) is fair game, but anything outside of this either gets approached with a degree of ignorance or simply ignored altogether.

For me, anime is best consumed in it's native language (like most non-english productions) but there are loads of people out there that are still hung up on consuming media that requires them to read subtitles (especially when it comes to animation for some reason) and whilst there are some good anime dubs out there they're largely pretty poor in my opinion.

Me and my girlfriend (whom, to my knowledge, has never properly watch an anime series before) recently went on a bit of East Asian tv series binge on Netflix as she'd enjoyed Alice in Borderland, Sweet Home amongst a couple others. Trying to suggest an anime series to her though and she wasn't really interested.

I just think it's the medium and the themes that put people off, alongside the whole language thing. Doesn't really help that anime still has a bit of an iffy rep with the wider Western populous in general, particularly in the UK.

I view Jojo's Bizarre Adventure personally to be the best series I've watched in years, anime or otherwise, and I'll always be happy to talk about & recommend it as it's honestly incredible from more than one perspective.. but at the same time I can fully accept that it probably wouldn't interest many people on this side of the world based on the medium alone.

One thing I will say is that it has gotten more and more popular in recent years and streaming platforms like Netflix continue to add anime shows to their platform. I just can't see anything really 'breaking the mold' and getting the UK as a country to properly embrace the medium and beginning to consume it more heavily as a result. In other words it's probably still quite niché all being said.

True, I've started watching Sword Art Online, not an anime fan but the concept was cool so gave it a shot. Ots about being in a vr game and they can't end the game.

Currently watching The Santa Clarita Diet on NetFlix.
Very weird and occasionally very funny, definitely worth a try

I thought the first series was one of the cleverest, well written black comedies that I`ve ever seen, with Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olpyphant perfectly cast as the joint leads.

It`s the type of comedy that the Americans do so well at.
