UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifiers Thread

Just seen the goals. That first minute howler from Keane. Yowch! That's typical Everton defending that - not being switched on straight away from the moment play starts.

Do we have any whistles in Finch Farm to check out my theory that some of the players are actually deaf to high frequencies?

Joe Gomez is surely the centre back who is the future for England. It's true centre backs often work best in partnerships and that built up between van Dijk and Matip mean opportunities in the centre at club level are limited.

However he has the speed to recover, is very comfortable on the ball and distributes well. Maguire and Keane are too similar they're big and don't turn or sprint quick enough, Gomez would help enormously and has to be brought in.

With TAA, he does have severe limitations defensively and so it possibly depends on alternatives and opposition as well as the style of play adopted. If England go out for all out attack against lesser teams, we'll score more than how ever many we give away, then he suits - he's still very young and could improve defensively, not go missing so much. It very much depends on the football the manager wants to play.

This team clearly is making unforced errors at the back but that centre back partnership can be changed and acquire recovery speed. The attacking philosophy has made them far more entertaining to watch and the attack looks a match for virtually any team atm. (that doesn't mean every team - you can always cite Mbappe, Griezemann although Kane beats Giroud and possibly Sterling for Griezemann with Sanchos potential, or maybe big Rom at Belgium).

I like watching England even if it would be preferable if we didnt have to play qualifying games where, against even the toughest opponents in the group, we have to give them three goals and miss a pen to somehow pretend it was even close.

England are clearly one of the best sides in Europe atm, the fact they beat top sides Spain and Croatia in their Nations League group to reach the semis was a step in the right direction after their World Cup semi disappointment.

With home advantage for most of their matches they are in the top four or five contenders for the Euros and anything less than the semis would now be disappointing.

Pleasantly surprised with Kosovo tbf, thought they were going to be another whipping boy side like San Marino/Luxembourg but they actually have a go in games and were 15-16 games unbeaten before last night, could be a potential dark horse in the future if they keep playing that way

Luxembourg don't really deserve to be in that category either

Their last 3 losses were 0-1 to Ukraine and Northern Ireland and 1-3 to Serbia, so they're hardly getting wellied like a San Marino or a Gibraltar would (They beat San Marino 3-0 the last time they played in fact and have taken 4 points of Lithuania in their Euro 2020 Group)

We lost the second-half 2 - 0.

Never any points for winning a second half if you've been smashed to pieces in the first. For all the rightful criticism for far too many self inflicted wounds it was all over at half time.

Goals nearly always change games but perhaps not goals when you're already 5 -1 down. They shouldn't have thought job done but if a match is won you can sometimes see a difference in attitude.

Carelessness, lack of concentration and just easing off can mean stupid goals conceded.

Heard James McFadden saying he saw really encouraging signs in Scotland's second half display against Belgium. They had far more possession than the first half and only a late goal meant the second half wasn't 0-0, all in the context of losing 0-3 at half time of course.

As long as he's playing alongside Van Dijk it will be hard to determine how good he is. Lovren looks competent next to him too. And no Maguire is not to the same level to cover for him so nobody suggest that nonsense.
