In my opinion, the key to success for England is getting 1 or 2 players into the CM positions who can actually play football and play through pressing. The likes of Henderson and Dier are just not up to it. I think Harry Winks is going to be a very important player for us at least in the short term because he's the only such player we've got who's ready for the national team. IMO no coincidence that our 2 best Nations League results, against Spain and Croatia came with him in the team and no Henderson. On the other hand, our 2 worst recent results, against Holland and Croatia at the WC. They pressed us high and our defenders were forced into mistakes playing out because they weren't given an outlet by a technically and mentally weak midfield. The problem is who else is there apart from Winks. I had high hopes for Nathaniel Chalobah but he's stalled. Skipp looks good but is not ready. Other than that I don't really know. Maybe in time the likes of Maddison, Foden etc will be able to drop deeper and dictate play from deep, the way Modric and Pirlo did as they got older (not saying they'll be as good as those 2 obvs). But I don't think they're ready for that yet.England have a great generation of players right now, players such as Sancho, Sterling, Mount, Maddison, who are excellent. Although I do believe Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany all have superior teams.....so it's up to Gareth Southgate to figure out how to beat those teams or England will find it very hard to win anything.
That was pretty obvious from his punditry before he got the job. Sounded like he didn't have a clue what he was talking about most of the time. Can't wait for giggs to go, he's clueless.
Never been so deflated after watching my own team win than last night. I didn't even celebrate bale's goal, there's probably a video that makes me look like an Azerbaijan fan because I'm just shaking my head in amongst all the other fans celebrating.
We didn't deserve to win in any way, they had more shots on target ffs, just felt sorry for Azerbaijan. Can't wait for giggs to go, he's clueless.
I think it highlighted again just how few truly awful teams there in Europe these days

Don't agree with the feeling sorry bit for Azerbaijan and Wales did deserve to win and had much the better chances. However I whole heartedly agree that Giggs is clueless and needs to go asap. Coleman is available and if we have any chance of beating Hungary and Slovakia to get 2nd place in the group, he needs to be hired and get Roberts back in the fold.
An/the inevitable delay (as they are not going to sack Giggs) means we fail to qualify, just got to hope afterwards they can bin him off and get the old coaching team back ready for the world cup qualifiers.
That said Giggs was unlucky that Ramsey was unavailable though, for all our decent young talents none are obviously anywhere near the standard of Aaron and it shows we need our best players available to stand a chance.
Shouldn't be relying on Ramsey to beat Azerbaijan tbh. I thought we created absolutely nothing, the only save the keeper made was from a speculative 30 yarder.
Not impressed with the defence.I think England might legit be one of the best teams in Europe
Not THE best, but they might be in the conversation
