UEFA response to Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

On Friday Uefa’s executive committee is to be holding a meeting to relocate this year’s Champions League final from St Petersburg to a new city due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. In my opinion, besides relocating the final the Uefa needs to be stronger with their condemnation of Putin’s aggression by excluding all Russian clubs from all Uefa competitions. And by cutting ties with Gazprom, Russia’s state-owned energy giant, and one of eight Champions League global sponsors. While it is unfair that Russian football clubs and fans have to pay for the irrational acts of Putin, he needs to be held accountable on all fronts (including sports) for invading a free democracy, killing innocent people, and for trying to destabilize Europe. I’m sure the Uefa doesn’t want to take any drastic measures that would cause their greedy arses to lose any capital or profits. But we are at critical time when money must be secondary to a peaceful Europe. Now more than ever is time for Uefa’s executives to impose the most punitive punishment to Russia’s football federation and all their football clubs. But is it going to happen? After witnessing Uefa doing nothing to punish the teams that were pushing for the Super League fiasco, I’m not too confident of them, but I hope to be proven wrong.

What’s your point of view on this issue?

My point of view is:

1: Wrong part of the forum
2: You voted for Biden who has done zero to oppose Putin.
3: Some good points made in your post.

I don’t think Putin gives a single solitary feck about sporting events, sports teams or even his mates receiving sanctions.

He’s nearly 70 years old, he’s been in power as long as I can remember and in my opinion he’s going for one last hurrah.

I really feel for the people of Russia, not just Ukraine, where most of them are innocent people who don’t want this either but will be arrested on site for displaying any negative attitudes about Putin or the war.

It’s a terrible situation which is only going to get worse the longer than Putin is alive.

You hit the nail on the head, these guys like to leave behind a legacy and his is a desire to return to the former days of the Soviet Union. The sanctions being declared as the greatest ever are nothing more than a slap on the hand, they won’t stop him.

Sadly true - and we’re owned by one of his cronies….?

RAWK loonies already seeking to weaponise the situation - suggestions of them all waving Ukraine flags ( in essence a worthy notion, but clearly not their motivation) or wearing one of their old yellow strips, to signify to the watching public that they are the ‘good guys’. Of course none of these contributors will be anywhere near Wembley on Sunday.
The bewildering thing is that some of these people truly believe what they type and see their allegiance to a football team as a confirmation of their status as human beings.

Whats the thoughts on roman in general especially with the last few days developments?

Obviously a bit concerned. Clearly he’s no saint and with his connections he’ll be given a tough time, which he probably merits. If it ends up with an AFC Chelsea then so be it. 2022/23 home games on Eel Brook Common….?
You'll be fine.

The holding company that Abramovich owns your club with, he'll just take his name off it and still carry on wiring money to your accounts to cover losses, transfer splurges.

Bad news for your new stadium aspirations though, I just cannot see Abramovich rekindling that while he is a pariah in the UK.

You owe him £1.5 billion in loans, if he has plans to sell, it's going to be hard getting a buyer, football clubs just do not get bought for billions, the debt owed and the need to increase capacity at Stamford Bridge which is another billion on top and he'll want another chunk of money just for selling to come away with some profit.

That could be something like £3 billion plus to buy Chelsea.?

Sass as far as I can see Putin has by no means got unanimous support from Russians.

Nevertheless, allowing him to have a propaganda festival like the CL Final would be ridiculous.

I do feel for genuine Russian soccer fans but what is happening to Ukrainian nationals is horrendous.

He doesn’t have unanimous support and some Russians are indeed victims of his regime, just like the people of Ukraine. But he still has a lot of support too and in a recent poll over half of Russians thought it was justified to use military force to prevent NATO expansion. So while no all Russians deserve to be punished for Putin’s madness. Moving the Champions League final was a step on the right direction to hold Russia accountable. Even if Putin doesn’t care about football or sporting events being cancelled it is a punishment that was necessary to be placed on Russia.

You’re totally right. There was one report, can’t remember which channel as I watch them all. They were talking to Russians on the streets and asking them about all of this, it was good to hear a number speaking out, but it was scary to hear the responses of some of them. No doubt the propaganda machine and fear playing a part, but you also got the feeling that many wanted the so called good old days of the Soviet Union back. Putin is for the most part held in high regard it seems.
