Does this mean Ireland’s Golden Generation has actually qualified for a tournament? Well done lads. Baby steps.
Actually, no. Only 2 teams can get automatic qualification so it looks like all the teams will go into qualifying as it's unlikely there will be an agreement on who gets the spots. There is a chance that if 2 of the 5 don't qualify then they might be able to take the 2 hosting spots but it's not clear yet.

The FA definitely want England to go through qualifiers as they want competitive games rather than 2 years of friendlies.

What would happen if 4 of the home nations dont qualify? It isnt that such a long shot is it?

Well the sensible thing to do (if allowed) would be to have them play each other in 2 two legged ties and the 2 winners get the spots. The team that did best in qualifying plays the team that did worst and then the other 2 play each other.

What I don't know is when the hosts have to take up the automatic qualifying spots. As in do they have to decide before qualifying starts? I guess they could theoretically keep them as wild cards and then at the end of qualifying see what the situation is. If all 5 have qualified then the next best 2 qualifiers get the spots. This is all guesswork from me though. I'll have a google and see if I can find any concrete info.

Two highest ranked teams get to auto qualify otherwise what's the point of having rankings?

That said a lack of competitive fixtures isn't a great way to prepare for a tournament you have a chance of winning.

Will be interesting to see how it's worked out.

I’m just listening to a footy podcast and they said that the two places will be kept open and if more than 2 don’t qualify automatically then the two best performers in qualifying will get the spots.

Not sure if that is 100% confirmed or just the current thinking.

That seems a fair way to do it.

Would have thought UEFA would want as many host nations there as possible. Certainly helps to sell tickets for the group games.

All should go through the qualifying process.

  • If all five qualify - great;
  • If four qualify - might as well let the unqualified side enter;
  • If three qualify - again, just let the other two enter;
  • If two qualify - the highest placed unqualified nation qualified automatically (if two nations are level on this count, the nation placed highest in UEFA rankings should qualify automatically). The other two unqualified nations should then have a play-off to determine the last spot - winner advances, loser eliminated;
  • If only one qualifies (highly unlikely) - have a miniature qualifying tournament to determine which two of the other four qualify;
  • If none qualify (extremely unlikely) - qualify the three highest ranking.
It is worth noting that hosting a tournament, or games at a tournament, doesn't necessarily mean qualification. Look at Azerbaijan - there were a few Euro 2020 games played in Baku, but they didn't qualify for the tournament as co-hosts.
