Uni

Going to UNI is a great experience for life irrespective of the outcome.

Mind if it was in something like engineering etc then you would be in a better position than say History, Sociology. Alternatively get a trade that is universally wanted and emigrate away from this overcowded island.

It's all worth it, Welts. You're doing a great degree course (second best in the Arts after philosophy :D), at a good university and it seems to me that you're having a fantastic time. Don't worry about the future. If you've got the energy to succeed, you'll be fine. Plus, the degree you get will aid all of that.

The only advice I would give to you is to nurture those contacts. They will come in useful at some point.

Is there actually any point?

In two year's time I'll have a piece of paper and a massive amount of debt, will it help me get a better job or is it just an excuse to get hammered on a regular basis?! (which is no bad thing obviously...)

Just look at it for what it is: probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to study something you're really interested in and gain some expertise concerning it. Use value not exchange value should be your yardstick.

I can see I'm in a minority of one here (reidy??) but...

...you don't have to go to university to grow up, to learn life skills, to party hard, to study something you want, to get ahead in what might be your future job or just about anything else mentioned above.

If it still was as it used to be, then fine, I'm with you all. Have fun there.

But Welts (and more than a few people on here in the past) have mentioned getting into serious debt by making that choice, which makes it less of a casual decision and more something that can seriously affect your life for better or worse. As can the alternatives.

Having a degree isn't necessarily a benefit in todays job market.

But not having a degree is a disadvantage in todays job market.

Work that one out....

What I will say is though Welts/Dom and whoever else is at University, a degree is for life and will always benefit your career, no one can take it away from you. The main thing is you achieve at least a 2:1.

On my first day of Uni I was taken into a car park and shown a few really nice cars. I was then simply told "Your spending more than this to come here.... make the most of it".

Enjoy your time at Uni, but get your head down when it matters.

It's been so long since I got my degree that I'm sure much has changed since then so I doubt I could give you any useful information.

Perhaps some of the friendships you make will become useful contacts in the business world at a later date.

One of the great things about uni is that it teaches you how to learn. But even greater than that are those university girls. PHWOOOOAR!

All I got was a CSE level 4 in woodwork - (Thicko) ha ha.

If you're above average on the 3 R's and you're not mental, you'll survive and make a decent life for yourself.

Enjoy being young. (y)

Doesn't make you thick at all, lid. I left without any decent qualifications due to being a lazy get, but then decided to retake them later on. I ended up with a first-class degree. It's all about where you are at a particular point in your life. I'm sure if you decided to go for it now, you'd do it without any problems. Degrees aren't hard at all, they're just time consuming.
