Good point.
In rugby TV, when video is called in the conversation between field referee and video judge are on air for all to hear.
Should be same with footie.

My American girlfriend has become a big rugby fan but not got into football. She notes the difference in refereeing, whenever I am watching football and shouting at the TV :)

Even the absolutely shambolic referring in the Wales/England 6 Nations game, you heard the logic and although everybody else disagreed there was a general consensus of the respect for refs still there. The ref after the game apologised publicly and admitted he got it wrong.

If Refs want respect then they have to show respect to fans and players alike. To start with, let's hear the conversation, let us hear the thought process, but without knowing their process we have to go straight to the possibility of bias at best and cheating at worst.

On the one hand, Hawk-Eye has rendered tennis umpires are more or less obsolete, and anything to get rid of the current crop of Prem referees.

On the other hand, the cynic in me wonders how long it would take the Prem to start ginning up bogus replays and Hawk-Eye outputs to support the stories they want to tell. The offside rule isn't the problem all that often in any event - it's the inconsistent interpretation of foul calls, which I would argue is a feature rather than a bug. I think that what worked originally was the controversy, and therefore the discussion that followed. Today, it's about the money, and we see year after year that big fish get better refereeing outcomes on average than small fish receive.
I think the drastic change to offside has been an issue with the fans though and what is considered offside.

Offisde is offside so the element of a direct on/off is fine if you want to go down the computer route. It's the what is still considered offside that is the issue that needs some sort of leeway. If someone's hand is offside, that is ridiculous. Anything that isn't permitted in football being offside shouldn't be counted. Wheras a head or a knee even is fine.

It's just the lack of leeway that is seeing so many silly calls being made.

Machines don't do the leeway thing. I can imagine programming a machine to ignore parts of the body that can't score goals, though I wouldn't envy the programmer(s). If you ask me, there's no point in spending all the money on technology if some VAR official is free to ignore or overrule the result.

Var was a great idea but it has been introduced awfully and is killing the game. It's just another way for the top sides to get decisions unfortunately.

There offsides should never needed all the palaver over shirt sleeves or the stupid line drawing crap - common sense should have dictated what they did, but they completely ballsed up its introduction.

It's a little better this season, but still not right.

The handball stupidness is another example of common sense flying out the window.

Ultimately it comes down to this - var will never work as it should, when you need a fat incompetent mess like John Moss to be watching the screens and relaying his flawed opinion back to the equally incompetent mess who is on the pitch.

The fellas watching the screens are crap refs when they are on the pitch - why should that become good refs just because they are sitting watching a screen making the same idiotic calls.

The example is the non-pen for us yesterday, which should have stood 100% in my opinion.

Just imagine the uproar if that's going on against the vermin, or United, or even Chelsea or city!?

It’s an absolute joke , not too strong to say I despise it . I happily watch it every week in RL and frequently in Union and cricket pretty much without incident but football it is a disgrace.

The worst thing about VAR is that it is managed by people at a remote location and who are not accountable for their decisions. However unlikely, it is also highly vulnerable to abuse. With a few exceptions (handball, offsides etc.,) no play-back should be in slow-motion. VAR sees what the ref sees.
The most desirable change though, would be to dump it completely.

In relation to the bit in bold, hammer meet nail :)

You are right as well about offside, this can be considered a very black and white decision, is he off or not. They ballsed it up by trying to be too clever, all it took was a slightly thicker line and all is a bit better. But, are we surprised, when they brought out the phases and all that crap there was chaos in the decisions. There is just a major lack of understanding of the game and common sense. and until that is resolved we will have regular incompetence.

For me, VAR is allowing refs to try and be clever about all their decisions. Like the pen on Sunday, it was never that clear that Lloris even touched the ball. It turned into a process of them trying to find a way to show that it was clear, it never was shown and yet it was still overturned. Rather than looking at it, in full speed, from a couple of angles, quickly determining that it is not clear and getting on with getting the right decision.

I've watched the pen that wasn't about 25 times, normal speed, slowed down, sped up - I still don't think lloris touched the ball before he cleared out richarlison.

I'm certain we will see many more just like that given this season, absolute joke.

Then the cocked up restart after turning the decision over really was the icing on the cake.
