Vintage year for albums

Occurred to me on Vereauxi's brilliant 5-10 albums thread.

What's the best year for albums? criteria will obviously be personal taste.

1972 stands out for me.

Paul Simon - Paul Simon
Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill.
Lou Reed - Transformer
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Neil Young - Harvest
Stevie Wonder - The Talking Book.
Rolling Stones - Exile on Main St.
Genesis - Foxtrot
Yes - Close to The Edge.
Jethro Tull - Thick As a Brick.
Al Green - Let's Stay Together.
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly.
Linda Lewis - Lark-

Some absolute classics there. I'm sure there'll be other vintage years
Never listened to a single one.

David Hepworth wrote a book about 1971 being the greatest year for rock music (Led Zep 4, Blue, What's Going On, Hunky Dory, Tapestry, Imagine, American Pie, Never A Dull Moment, Family Affair, Who's Next, Sticky Fingers, LA Woman, Electric Warrior).

Objectively, Hepworth is probably right but in keeping with @Gwladys St. Glory's observation, I am going for the year I was 15 that is 1978.

Blondie - Parallel Lines
Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
Buzzcocks - Love Bites
Chic - C'est Chic
The Clash - Give' Em Enough Rope
Devo - Q. Are We Not Men?
Elvis Costello - This Year's Model
The Jam - All Mod Cons
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
Kraftwerk - Man Machine
P.I.L. - P.I.L.
Queen - Jazz
The Rolling Stones - Some Girls
S.L.F - Inflammable Material
X Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents

Some brilliant singles also that year (not included on those albums): Shot By Both Sides, Another Girl Another Planet, Is This Love, One Nation Under A Groove, Baker Street, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, Blame It On The Boogie, Roxanne, Hong Kong Garden, Take Me I'm Yours, You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) Teenage Kicks, Dreadlock Holiday.

Also, the year of my first season ticket and Bob Latchford's 30 goals.

I'll add to this that surely pink floyd would've been working in Dark Side of the Moon for release the following year.

Some great shouts. For some reason 72 always stuck in my mind when I was listening to stuff. who knows why? maybe I played 2 or 3 of those LPs consecutively and thought 'wow what a year!'

Then you check out 1977 and see we had, Aja, Exodus, Rumours, New boots and Panties, Animals, The Clash, Never Mind The Bollocks, 77, In The City, Heroes, All 'n' All, Heavy Weather, Rattus Norvegicus.

We are truly blessed.

Too early to tell whether it will be seen as a vintage year in years to come, but there's been some fantastic music released in 2024. Outside of mainstream there's still great music being produced. You just need to go looking for it.

I think there has been a huge boom in music since COVID, lockdowns probably helped this

I also think record labels having less money for various reasons has lead to better/more creative ways of marketing

Look, 1988 had Daydream Nation, Surfer Rosa, Isn't Anything, Bug, Nothing's Shocking, Superfuzz Bigmuff, Blue Bell Knoll, Hairway to Steven, the first House of Love LP, Today, Bummed, It Takes A Nation of Millions..., Follow the Leader, Straight Outta Compton, And Justice For All...

There are some of my favourite records ever among that lot. It was a fantastic year, especially if you like noisy/weird geetar stuff. A groundbreaking year for hip hop, too.
