So you download it to your firestick, then when watching the might blues you set it to a particular country and it keeps the speed reasonable?
Yep, exactly.

Actually, I leave it connected all the time. (apart from the 5 mins I unplug my firestick every week just cos I read it somewhere)

Despite what Joey says, I've never had any issues with mine.

So if it's on your fire stick, how come the router in your house isn't detected as being in the UK? Don't you need a VPN on your router?

Because if you're using a VPN app on the Fire TV Stick it's only impacting any other apps that are on the Stick. Anything off the Stick, for example if you have a smart TV with apps on it, remains as normal.

Great question - you can get a VPN on your router if you want to, but it's not necessary.

VPN is a tunnel connection (hence, the name, Virtual Private Network) similar to your own router at home that connects your device to a further point of routing/access; it's basically a virtual and activateable gateway for all of your traffic to pass through, instead of your home router.

The layman's terms I guess is "your ISP connection is a highway, but you're using a tunnel dug just for you on the side halfway down the line".

The reason why any traffic isn't coming back to you but to the VPN's address is similar - the tunnel is now the main point of traffic to connect to you. When you disable it - it goes back to the regular route of "Device <-> Router <-> Outside internet".

Now there's also a ton of other specifics as to why exactly this is actually a function of it and exactly how it functions/routes, but explaining the OSI model is probably a step too far here lol

I have expressvpn.

There's cheaper ones out there, but uts never let me down.

I have a multi device licence so have it installed on my laptops, phone, firestick etc. (it's ace on a firestick/dodgy box because it stops your ISP throttling your speed, something they'll never admit to)
I used to have Express too and was very happy with it
