Bill's vaguely hilarious tribute on the official site is almost a parody in its stereotypical lachrymosity.

And yet it's lovely. He's good at this old guff is Bill. A charlatan, but you know in cases like this he means every word.
Who will write the tribute for Bill when his own time is up, I wonder? In fact, the arl get has probably done a Norris off Corrie and written his own final words to be read out on the loudspeaker at Goodison!

It has to be said his time here was horrendous. The football was dire but he wasn't helped in that by Johnson handing him cash then taking it away again. It was an unhappy period for the club.

He must have been a decent manager to get Rangers to a Euro final though.

IMO Smith's greatest achievement was continuing the Souness revolution at Rangers. He didn't try and turn back the clock to the old days, but dragged that club (if not its supporters) into the modern age of football. For me that's his legacy.

RIP.

He sacked him. End of story.

18 months too late. Even when he was ruthless he was cringingly sentimental.
As I said mate: Walter's time at Everton in a football sense was extremely poor. Kenwright extended his contract when he took over from Johnson when he really shouldn't have. The feller was - and continues to be - an absolute nuisance for Everton.

It might not mean much to some people but I'll forever associate Walter Smith with one of my happiest childhood memories. I was eleven years old and with my Grandad at Anfield when we won 1-0 in Sept 1999. My Grandad passed away in 2005 and there hasn't been a day go by since then that I haven't missed him. Whenever I think about him and the good times, that day will always be among them. For that reason alone I've always had a soft spot for Walter.

RIP and thanks for your part in that day.

...who will ever forget that cup tie away at Middlesborough, when only a way-past-his-best Gazza was the only Everton player who seemed to think it was an important game. None of the other ten should ever have been allowed to wear the shirt again. Gazz pulled what was left of his tripe out for his friend WAlter but no one else was bothered.
Has Gazza made a comment yet ?

Will hit him hard this news.

Dacourt
Matterazzi
Campbell
Collins
Weir
Gough
Bakayoko - (big signing that didn't work out)

Bought some decent talent in that first season.
I really don't want to hijack this thread but i cant let John Collins name go unchallenged on that list, he was to quote Walter himself "very disappointing". From the moment he missed a penalty on his debut it was downhill from there.

RIP
Walter
