Want to post something but there isn't a thread that quite fits - thread

Tough to find a thread to praise Gary Neville.. but he does seem a decent fella..

This post (thanks Toast) provided some very pleasant nostalgia. In the late 1950's I played for a representative team against a Huddersfield Town eleven. Can't remember who the representative team was, nor the score, but do remember that it was the first time I had played under floodlights. After the game and shower, we went into an area where a buffet was laid out. As I entered the room I heard my name called out and one of our officials beckoned me over. I recognised the man he was talking to as Huddersfield's manager Bill Shankly. Next to Bill Shankly was a young blond haired lad who I took to be his son. I was introduced to Mr Shankly as 'our team captain'. I shook hands with Mr Shankly and all he said was 'let me introduce you to a future Scottish International', I then shook hands with the young lad but the name 'Denis Law' meant nothing to me at the time.
In the 1990's, Denis Law was guest speaker at our local Rugby Clubs Sportsman's dinner. I managed to get some time chatting to him and mentioned the above. Obviously, he didn't remember the occasion (unlike me!) but we had a good laugh about it. He was a bloody good guest speaker too!

Not sure yet mate, its still just an idea, Mrs D and I keep a constantly rotating top 10 of destinations and CR has been on there for a long time. Looks lovely and it seems they have some significant commitments to ecological preservation so it just seems like a fascinating place to go.
That's me and the hubby. So many places we would love to visit but our resources are limited, specially since we still have college to pay for our daughter. But if I could do it, I would love to travel all over the world and see all continents and many of its countries and people. The bad thing about doing all that traveling is that it is not super environmentally friendly :(

The Costa Rica government is known for its leadership in environmental policy and ecological preservation that's why is so appealing to me to live there. Unlike the US, Colombia, and many countries around the world. CR doesn't have a military depleting their budget and leaving no money for other important needs. In CR no having a defense budge means that resources can be allocated for other important things such as addressing deforestation. The government gets to have money to do things like paying local communities to help protect the natural ecosystem. By doing so it became the first tropical country to have stopped, and subsequently reversed, deforestation. The Costa Rican people are also very proud of their natural resources and want to protect their environment. The country’s ecological preservation achievement the past few decades is a clear disparity to the rest of the tropics, in places such as Brazil and Colombia, where deforestation rates continue to increase. So I would definitely recommend going there and witnessing yourself how a country can make ecological preservation a priority and be successful at it.

Having recovered from NYE excesses, I saw a 1930s recipe for a Gimlet
Gin, Roses lime juice, crushed ice...it said some 'syrup' for sweetness, but I put in 1/3 teaspoon of castor sugar
Nice...and Im not a Gin drinker.

When the playing side is not going too well and the Everton forum is full of grumbling, criticising and false hopes that keep crashing down. How nice it is to disappear into the Ale House and browse through the various topics. Always something either very amusing or very interesting. I know I have the time but I often go back through the history of some threads and turn up some gold dust that I missed or forgot about.

Resisting my inclination to post this in the Fit Birds thread.

Courtesy of @bigjonny in the pubs thread...(tbh, you have to read the piece for context, its not long)

George Orwell got it right in 1943
If Orwells pub didn't actually exist then, then 75yrs on, even the mere shadow of its ghost has all but disappeared...if it ever existed at all...and you believe in ghosts, not to mention their shadows.

Apropos of nothing.
"A Writer" - a person who can put down something readable about almost anything.
I read a lot but I'm not 'Literary' and I always thought Orwell...and I always mix him up with the other guy Huxley...was a bit of a one hit wonder, but by god he has a way with words.
We 'Ladies of a certain age' who odd times frequent The Oldies Thread', might, if we listen hard enough hear Alistair Cooke reading that in his best 'Letter from America' voice.
Just sayin like

Well said , I see what you mean re. Alistair Cooke , and Orwell’s piece gave numerous Wetherspoon pubs their name. As for being a one hit wonder, I’m not having that :) , I’d recommend “Keep the Aspidistra flying “, “Coming up for air “ and “A Clergyman’s daughter”.

Well you are certainly mixing him up with somebody @degsy. lol
I would definitely agree with @bigjonny's recommendations (particularly 'Keep The Aspisistra Flying') and would also add 'Burmese Days', 'Homage To Catelonia', 'Coming Up For Air' and 'Down And Out In Paris And London'. . . . before mentioning the three that he is perhaps most famous for i.e. 'Animal Farm', 'The Road To Wigan Pier' and 'Nineteen Eighty Four'
