A test shot by the Australian Navy (A Collins class diesel sub firing a US made Mk-48 torpedo) shooting an inactive destroyer for certification purposes.
The Mk-48 is our older sub launched torpedo, being phased out and replaced by the Mk-48 ADCAP (Advanced Capabilities). Faster and smarter with the same bang. In the sub-fleet we say there are two types of ships in the world. Submarines and Targets. We also view Nuclear powered aircraft carriers in terms of weapons expended. 2 Mk-48's. Thats it.
A Mk-48 is able to destroy such a big target by not actually hitting the target. What it actually does is perform a dive maneuver as it reaches the target, detonating beneath the keel of the ship, creating a high-pressure bubble, coupled with 500lbs of HE, breaks the back of the target and splits it in two, as seen in the video.
I know this target was stationary, but rest assured, these torpedoes work equally effective (even better actually) against moving targets
