Back then obstruction could be given in the penalty area for blatant obstruction e.g. standing in front of an attacking player to block his run etc that tackle was GBH nailed on pen - the Ref was a well known fixer of games then & in the future - Joe Royle noticed, & later stated the home team officials took him out on the town & to a Casino the night before the game ....That tackle in the box (right at the end) resulting in a free kick in the box ......Didn't look like obstruction to me, looked a cert pen.
Refs were a bit dodgy in Europe at that time.
I remember have a tranny (radio ) at school for that match. Almost in tears when we lost then the dreaded semi final of the cup against the Dark side where I believe Labone played his last game for us as they crocked him.
Bad memories but still nice to look back. Should have been us v Ajax in the Final
Pre match build up and full Match of the Day highlights of the 1985 FA Cup semi v Luton. Apologies in advance for the brief segment of Emlyn Hughes talking about the upcoming match! Makes you realise how magical the semi finals were (if we won of course!) when they were played at normal league grounds rather than at Wembley.
