Whether coaches were actually any good at the thing they're teaching themselves doesn't make that much a difference, surely? just like how you see plenty of managers out there who played at a very high level in the game not really transferring that. We've been managed by two such cases ourselved in recent years..
He's obviously been working on his coaching chops ever since he retired from playing, so if he's been identified as having a particular set of credentials to his name (in this case, set pieces) then fair play - give him a go. The way I see it, the more that this lot get coached across all aspects of the game, the better.
