Were You Any Good At Football When Young ?

I played the square total of one game, in 1996 for my year 6 B team, I’d signed up to play centre mid and had trained in that position in the run up but come game time our PE teacher/coach put me at centre back, up against our school rivals A team, blind as a bat because it was less than a year after being diagnosed as short sighted, and we got battered 5-1

I remember playing in Kirkby when I was younger. We had two lads in our team, 1 who played at Everton and 1 at them lot. Pair of them were boss. Like you could tell they were class. The lad at them lot was voted best youngster in the NW etc. That was when we were about 12. We also had 2 or 3 lads who could of played at a much higher level but genuinely couldn’t be arsed and love the green and ale to much.

Time they are both 15 they didn’t play for the clubs. Both never played professionally. Brutal the step up. I’ve read about lads playing in the Liverpool area who are better than most in the football leagues but could never be arsed with it.

I was pretty good, played left back even though i am right footed, even had Brookside turn up at my School one day looking for people to be part of a background scene - Typcal me was not feeling well the day they turned up and i was that dizzy i ended up falling over the bench, while scoring an og with my wrong foot falling over lol

I was a decent keeper in my youth. I was never going to make it seeing I am vertically challenged, but I have some great memories of playing and making some very good saves.

One time I was getting the bus and a group of students recognised me from watching a 5-a-side tournament that the college put on and they were basically singing my praises the whole journey saying it was the best goalkeeping performance they had ever seen. My team were utter tripe and we lost every match but I managed to keep the scores respectful only losing 2-0 to the eventual tournament winners despite being battered the whole game and one of those was a penalty. Anyhow it was a tiny little insight to what must be like to have fans.

We had very good players at our school as we were only allowed to use a tennis ball in the playground. Problem was playing with a massive Casey on a Saturday morning.

Same here mate.

When I was 14/15 my school team and Sunday league teams were both packed with academy boys, but non for Everton for some strange reason. ( I was the Tony Hibbert of the team - could tackle, but never went past the half way line )

Five / six of them went onto to sign as pro’s - Wigan/ RS and one in Saudi ( where his family were from )

The only lad who made it, was the lad who went to Saudi - made a fortune, came home, bought a massive general store and loads of houses to rent out, near to where he was from in Toxteth.

I was never any good at actually striking the ball properly, I used to "toe bung". The lads used to shout "toey" whenever I struck a shot. That said, I had/have a good football brain so I used to operate in midfield and pick passes out mostly. Can't really think of a player I could be compared to at the top of my head. Xavi?

Oh, and I was much taller than anyone else, 6'7" in high school to the precise (Xavi's probably not the best comparison, is he? lol )

Anyway,,,, yeah, I was very good … no point in lying is there 🤷‍♂️

*settles back to take incoming pelters
I admire your honesty, but you were never in my league. Just being honest.
Funny thing is, I think I grew up in the last generation that played football in the streets, constantly. Everyday, hours everyday, all year round. There were some cracking players who didn’t even really like the game that much. But they could play because that’s what everyone else was doing. So their only other option was to stand around and watch.

I played for school teams, then local teams - Saturday and Sunday league. Never at a high level though. Crowds of no more than 30 people, mostly friends with a pint in hand.
I did play against former prem players Danny Butterfield and (our own) John Oster though.
