I suppose it also depends on his circumstances.

If he is struggling along from week to week and the five grand pays his bills for the next few months then he is more likely to cash out.

But if he is reasonably affluent then going for the big one is well worth the risk

£5k is nice, but not potentially life changing. Well, for most I would guess. I wouldnt cry forever if I lost the 5k, but I would not forget losing £50k.
