I wasn't appointing Frank Lampard or anybody who I didn't think was going to do a better job than the previous manager. If there was nobody to make us better, stick with the previous guy. That was the horrible reality we faced: keep Benitez - whose results were terrible - or get somebody who would get better results. We appointed a man with name recognition and no serious record as a successful coach.

Lampard’s problem, though, is that he hasn’t worked out how to form this pile of mince into a passable football team.

Ancelotti got it, but I don’t think Lampard has quite found the requisite pragmatism yet.
