BBC NEWS | UK | England | London | Violence erupts at London derby

A man has been stabbed in the chest during violence involving "hundreds" of fans outside West Ham's Upton Park stadium during a game with Millwall.

Fights broke out at 1915 BST and were still raging more than an hour later. Police are assessing a man stabbed in nearby Priory Road at about 2025 BST.

A fan told the BBC it was the worst hooliganism he had seen in 30 years.

A Met spokesman said: "It looks like there has been some planned trouble disorder from fans."

He added: "Hundreds of fans are estimated to be involved."

British Transport Police said they heard reports of minor overcrowding at the Tube station near the ground, but their log shows no arrests.

'Bottles and bricks'

The BBC's Ben Jacobs, who is at the stadium, said: "The trouble broke out outside the Tube station about 600 yards from the ground.

"There were 500 to 1,000 riot police and Millwall fans managed to break through the divide.

"Bottles were thrown and bricks were as well."

He added: "There has been a bit of trouble inside the ground.

"There was a penalty shout and fans started gesturing and throwing small objects. But police do have this under control."

Theres the starter, the main course will be coming soon.

It was so obvious this was going to happen and it will only get worse particularly when the match ends. The Police dont have a clue how to handle these situations.

I believe () this goes bk to when a fan died after he was thrown infront of an underground train sometime bk in the early 80s . Ever since then whenever these two meet all the old faces who should have grown up alongtime ago come out to play along with the younger lot . Sad . Last time we went down there in the cup a couple of us were drinking in Surry Quays when this narly old bloke about 50 came over and said all Den Watts style " You lot fackin norvanaaarsss or what ? " Que drinks supped quicktime and all heading for the exit :o

i've been watching the gillete special and honestly the most interesting part of it has been when they described the west ham millwall game just because the guy shouts about it a lot, plus there are the interspersed reports about fan violence

i'm properly trashed right now but it still can't seem to hold my interest, somehow people talking about football just doesn't do it for me

BBC radio keep reporting about the kick off in the ground too.
