Dave Gahan has a genuine case for the most underrated frontman. Has to do so much legwork with only Martin Gore next to him on guitar and the others on keyboards. The only extended version live is proper goose bumps stuff.

I recently watched 101 again and, aside from realising how annoying the kids were, remembered how brilliant the band are.
I'm a filthy casual with Depeche Mode so I only really listen to the glory period. To go from fluffy Essex boy synth band to dark synth rock global stadium fillers, all by themselves is one hell of a leap.
Shame they’re recent stuff has been a bit hit and miss.

It culminated in Dave Gahan’s heart stopping 3 times following a massive O/D. Martin Gore then suffered a heart attack through stress, alcohol and drugs.
On the flip side they deffo produced their best music during this period.
I saw them on that tour mate - GMex Manchester 1993. Massive cavernous venue, that was notoriously difficult to generate an atmosphere in.
I can remember it clear as day. I was stone cold sober ( driving ) with a girl I was seeing at the time.
It’s still one of my all time favourite gigs. Dave Gahan was just unstoppable that night and I’ve only ever seen a couple of live gigs that have lived up to it - Placebo and Echo and the Bunnymen.
I can remember coming out into the freezing cold and just standing on the steps stunned by what I’d just seen.
Yes mate.. I saw them at Crystal Palace (athletics stadium) on that tour. They blew me away. I was utterly mesmerised.
As a bonus Sisters of Mercy supported them and they were brilliant as well.
There were some sights at Crystal Palace that night I can tell you.Saw the Sisters in the Royal Court mid 80’s.
That was one bonkers gig. Goths, punks, rockers and football casuals all under one roof.
You most definitely did not want to be in the first three rows at that gig lol
