Me and my mate have disagreed on this album for over 30 years. I think it's a decent epitaph with some fine tracks (my favourite one below). He thinks it's mostly crap and easily their worst record.
Think I'd have it over Meat is Murder.
It sounds mad considering they're probably my 3rd favourite band ever but I'm not much of an album guy with The Smiths aside from The Queen Is Dead.

I prefer Strangeways to the debut myself (as I'm not that keen on its production or the vocals and prefer the Hatful of Hollow versions for most tracks) but I definitely prefer 'Meat' over 'Strangeways' (and "Queen", of course). Yeah, great singles band, but i'm a big fan of all their stuff really (apart those bad 1960s covers).
Got tickets for Download next year... getting some revision in.
Keep your expectations low; they're all approaching, or will be, 60 next year...haven't seen them myself since like '92, just advice from acquaintances.
