The age old question.

Two managers who took us bloody close to being doomed forever.

But who was worse?

Walker, with his Muller attempts?
Or
Smith (no relation), with his attempt to make a team of 36 year olds?

Smith spent a decent amount of money and couldn't get a team to play well. Maybe because he was a clueless dinosaur.

"Olivier Dacourt gave an interview to a French soccer magazine during which he said:
*** **’Mr Smith told me to go out and foul players. When I asked him about yellow and red cards the gaffer replied; “you don’t worry about yellow and red cards, I’ll worry about red and yellow cards”‘.*"

As @Milk says, Mike Walker because of expectations. Smith took over at a time when the club was in turmoil and had to put up with things like Johnson's exit and the NTL saga. He kept us afloat even if his football was painful. Mike Walker just seemed like a complete journeyman to me and was out of his depth.

Mike Walker days where horrific, but I was grateful for him bringing Joe Parkinson to the club.
He was a top class player till his injury cut short his career. 250k bargain.

I don't remember Mike Walker too well but I do remember Walter Smith playing what seemed like a full team of defenders at one stage - including Steve Watson up front! Not amazing days!
