Adrien is about 3 inches shorter for starters and a much better passer than witsel but doesn't have witsels presence
I talk a lot of William Carvalho and his work in the midfield as being most vital to Sporting in a defensive sense, but Adrien offers that little bit more than William, in my opinion.
Attacking Attributes
Adrien Silva, I feel, offers the greater attacking threat, something he showed in the game last weekend vs. Gil Vicente alone, by scoring a fantastic long-range effort that rifled its way straight into the top corner. He also provided a very cheeky assist for Nani’s goal in that game against Gil.
He is able to make runs forward with the ball and pick out a pass that the likes of Cedric, Nani and Carrillo can latch onto to put a cross in from wide areas, as well as being able to pick out a pass that can unlock a defence and creating a real goal scoring opportunity for the likes of Islam Slimani and Fredy Montero, amongst others.
He is also Sporting’s penalty taker, and a very efficient one at that. He’ll very rarely miss a spot-kick, which shows that they can rely on him whenever they get awarded a penalty in games.
Although, it is worth noting that Adrien spends more time in the attacking third than William Carvalho does, but still, William’s good everywhere. However, this may not seem much and it may seem to many of you that this is just what every other attack-minded player does, but I can’t stress enough how important to a Sporting attack he is. He is actually able to link defence with attack at pace due to the timing of him releasing the ball to the wider or more advanced players.
Defensive Duties
This is another part of his game where Adrien Silva is strong. He is able to work well with William Carvalho and help his defence when the opposition attacks their goal. He shows good body strength as well, so he is able to muscle his way away from opponents and out of tackles.
The Sporting back-line is somewhat inexperienced and it needs someone with confidence to guide them through games, whether that’s in front of them, or behind them. Adrien, 25, may not be the most experienced player in the world, but he is still one of the more experienced players in the current Sporting squad. Not only that, but he also shows confidence in his game, and this is continues to grow. Sporting manager Marco Silva seems to see Adrien as an important player to this squad and he has been an ever-present so far this season, finding the net once and assisting once as well. Both the goal and assist coming against Gil Vicente.
Summary
Overall, I think Adrien Silva comes across as a player who just wants to get on with his job, however, I do feel that he is one very underrated footballer, by plenty of people, but not to Sporting supporters. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, he does begin to get the recognition he deserves from people further afield.
