Wimbledon 2023

Federer had more influence on how the game is played. That does matter, in the GOAT discussion. Djokovic ultimately evolved to play the game at a higher level than anyone else has, and proved it in the third set against Nadal in Paris two years ago. That was tennis at an unbelievable level. Spill-your-beer stuff every other point, from both of them.
Yeah, impact on the sport itself is a big part in it, I'd agree tbf.

His level at Wimbledon the past few years has been similar, the last 3 sets in the quarter final against Sinner where he came back last year was just out of this world.

And this coverage feels a bit off, I can handle the loss of Barker, but it's not the same without the occasional insane enthusiasm and loss of diction Becker could be relied on for. I know he was stuffing mattresses with other peoples cash, I know he was telling porkies about his ambassadorship, but damnit he can't run for parliament and needs a stage to effervesce.

Btw, you have to love Wimbledon this year: the bigots on the 'The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club Limited' committee who retreated from their opposition to Russian and Belorussian players entering (becuase they were demoted as a tournament that could hand out ATP tour points last year when they pulled that trick) are banning all Wimbledon memorabilia from sale in Russia and Belorussia.

Embarrassing from Wimbledon that last year.

Comfortable win for Murray which was to be expected given the opposition. Imagine a much sterner test against Thiem or Tsitsipas in round 2.
What a God-awful draw. Here, have a top-five player or a former Grand Slam champion as your reward for winning a first round match.

It doesn't look any better from their perspective. After your probable five set win, have a three-time Grand Slam champ with two wins here, and two gold medals. Good luck.

He's been making nathan lyon look mobile in these past three years. That he's fighting to be relevant is accomplishment in itself. I understand hanging on like, he's the personality of a still life bowl of fruit that's been left in the sun for three weeks.

Never been dynamic, no. If I had been him, I would have told Lendl to go lift that trophy at Wimbledon, than hand the thing to me. "You know you always wanted to, and they will go bonkers, so go pick that thing up for me, yeah?"

I still don't love playing an immobile Murray, if I'm them. It's like playing 40-year-old Connors, who has been irrelevant for years, in New York. You never know.

He'd probably be best signing off on the doubles circuit, where he's less to do so to speak. He's got the game and the shots, and could rely on someone elses hyper mobility to cover. Going out on a few titles could well be in reach, and it'll let the Sue Barkers of the world fawn after him one last time.

It would be tough for him. It's a shame that today's top players don't learn the doubles game. Never really did on the men's side, other than Newcombe. Martina probably ends up well ahead of Court on the list across all disciplines, if she doesn't take that long break. Martina pushing fifty was not someone you wanted to see on the other side of the net, in mixed.
