Danny, if you skipped Vista like a lot of us did, it's the one to get IHMO. As someone said, it's what Vista should've been. Been happy with it since I tried the RC. Running 64-Bit Pro and haven't had one issue, believe it or not. Games, apps, it's all been good.

To be honest (I just read the "Phrases You Hate" thread...now I know why I'm universally loved!!), though...if XP is working for you, wait until you have no choice (app/driver support etc.) but to step up. I like it but it doesn't make me cringe at the thought of going back to XP, if I had to. I suppose that's what you're really asking at the end of the day...

And if you feel comfortable with it, try to buy an OEM version rather than a full retail. Save quite a bit of money if you do (you don't get a fancy box, basically a clear DVD case with your legit Windows 7 disc and a product key sticker on the front)

The biggest concern I have is the evolution of the big brother scenario.
Vista is definitely a 'we're not showing you what we're collecting about you' operating system, with all it's hidden files and folders that need special run codes to access, so God knows what Windows 7 is up to.
At least with viruses, you know your enemy.

Seen the phrase used in this thread already, but my friend who just got a new laptop told me it was 'what Vista should've been'.

Essentially Windows 7 is an evolution of Vista. There are a couple of notable changes, but the guts are the same.

It is much the same thing as XP to Server 2003. If you ask me, Windows Server 2003 was what XP should have been. Stable, secure and FAST. XP eventually evolved to that when SP2 was released.

As for the personal info, I do believe there are a few laws against that, and lots of companies have been taken to court for silently taking personal info from users (big offenders were Sony and Blizzard, yeah, World of Warcraft loons), and there was high-profile lawsuits involved that didn't go well for the defendants.
