I'd like to bet not a single proponent of negative rep would place publicly any value on positive rep received.
That being the case why the desire for negative rep?

Likes are better because you judge the post not the poster.
Agreed, can't we just have a thumbs up/down option which would help to show opinion of each specific post? Like youtube?
I must admit to liking the whole roleplaying bit that goes on with rep, cliques and sniderman but that's because I have no life.
Can't really see the point in negging someone because they have a different footballing opinion to you.
Pipe down you titI'm a proponent for both pos and neg rep.
Both really important for the health of the forum imo.
It's important for people to have a way to vent or disagree with someone, but also allows to give others appreciation beyond a 'like'.
If I was to give an analogy it'd be like a birthday, sure you can say happy birthday, but it isn't quite the same as someone making the effort to get or make a card and write a nice message inside.
Positive and negative reputation provides us with a way of self policing, saying I agree with what you've said, or I disagree with what you've said. It allows us as forum members to have some control over the kinds of content we see.
A gently placed neg can say this isn't appropriate, I don't want to see this.
In the same way a pos can say post more, I like what you're posting about.
Pipe down you tit
(I would have sent this as a neg rep if the option existed, saves cluttering up the thread with childish posts and insults)
THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE OF HOW REP CAN BENEFIT ALL OF US.
