Paid for the brand it would seem. As you say, the game itself has been around for years, but brand recognition is huge for Wordle now.

The key things about Wordle are that it’s one play per day (so everyone is doing the same word at the same time), and the ease and method of sharing which doesn’t give up the answer.

Neither of those are really protectable as intellectual property, so don’t blame the guy for taking the money and running.
