Maurice Green?
Marion Jones?
Sydney McLaughlin?
then the many many variations in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Hard to compare such success...

31 years ago... Roger Black, Derek Redmond, John Regis, Chris Akabusi... Heroes!

But they are not household names, at least in this country today. If you ask a group of randomly selected people to come up with those names in a trivia game, it probably isn't happening. You ask something about those four I mentioned, and most hypothetical teams answer correctly. I want to say that the last time I played a trivia game and Marion Jones came up, almost none of the teams remembered her.

I remember that race it was great

The U.S.A. have amassed well over 50% of all medals won at the World Athletics Championships and this is the first time they host it. ?
You could hold it at Jerryworld or Kroenke's palace if you wanted, but you're not coming close to selling them out. That's just reality.

So, yeah, there has to be some sort of quid pro quo to explain why it's being held over here. That's a lot of ticket sales to flush when you're talking ten days.

bad bad casuals...

I mean, we all felt stupid, but the reality is that disgraced athletes are quickly forgotten unless they sold you a lot of merchandise (Armstrong) or were plastered all over the news at some point (Mark McGwire, Ben Johnson). I had totally forgotten that she went down with the Bonds ship. I did remember the coach drama. I had forgotten that it led to the clink.

Wasn't he running for Canada?

What an underwhelming venue.

This is down to Coe and his links with Nike.

Looking forward to the athletics, but the time zone is horrendous for us. 1am starts.
#firstworldproblems. Troll on you pretty thing @davek. ❤️X

he wasnt even close....

and, cos its friday and im in slightly higher spirits..

I mean, with the exception of the swimming gold in 1972 the other returned medals are in sports that do not get meaningful coverage in the United States. When I say 'big' I am referring to the degree of media coverage received. I don't know how that one played out here or elsewhere, seeing how I wasn't alive, but it looks to me like the USOC was just a bunch of idiots in Munich.

'The USOC is comprised of a bunch of blithering idiots' is not a news story. It would be like saying 'the people at the DMV are rude' or 'the odds of you getting back the correct change for a cash purchase at a gas station are less than 50/50'.

'That' basketball final and the silver medals still in a safe.
The 'entirety' of the "east" german olympic program. I believe there is one remaining world record left.
There are clouds over a number of olympic cyclists that have won medals and later admitted doping. medals unreturned.

This is just stuff available, wheres that 15 year old chinese world record swimmer gold medalist? Then theres the chinese doping scandals from the 70's 80's.
Nou Camp blood bags, spanish sporting renaissance. Terry Newton, and the inability to test under 16's in the UK in sporting success (specific to Rugby but it doesnt stop there)
David Millar is on comms for the tour. Pogacar is hammering the times of Froome and Armstrong.

The East German swim program thing blew up years after Ben Johnson. We all knew they were cheats, but this was equally true of all the weightlifters. Sports doping just wasn't much on the radar of a non-sports-nerd in the U.S. until Johnson was stripped of the 100m gold. Then, it was on the news every night for days. The NFL didn't start issuing steroid suspensions until '89, nobody cared about cycling until '86, nobody even noticed the blood doping at the '84 Olympics because it was legal, and so on.

Yep. Apparently the hotel prices are astronomical too.

It's far, far too small a city for a lengthy event like this. College athletic events generally are not sleepovers, and when they are we hold them in big cities. It's like holding the World's Fair in Knoxville, TN in 1982, which would have caused problems if anyone had still cared about the World's Fair.
