World Cup Squad

First eleven seems to be
James
Johnson Ferdinand Terry Cole
Lennon Gerrard Lampard Barry
Rooney Heskey

What needs backing up there? Hart or Green for James not both!
Which CB has any pace? Jags - no, Upson - no, King - maybe, if he can get the physio off his back, Dawson - no.
Walcott will deputise for Lennon for some reason.
Joe Cole for Barry.
Milner is a back up for the middle two.
Adam Johnson or Stuart Downing to provide winger cover?
Carrick will go (why), Hargreaves could go (why), Gary Neville could go (why why why).
Owen and Phil Neville are both knackered at the minute, why not take them along, just for the craic like.

My second eleven are.
Hart
Brown Jagielka Lescott Baines
him on loan at Bolton from Arsenal Milner Cattermole A.Young
Bent C.Cole

That would be very interesting.

Here's my picks for the 30 man provisional England WC party.

  1. James
  2. G. Johnson
  3. A. Cole
  4. Ferdinand
  5. Terry
  6. Parker
  7. Milner
  8. Gerrard
  9. Lampard
  10. J. Cole
  11. Rooney
  12. Green
  13. Richards
  14. Baines
  15. Dawson
  16. Upson
  17. Barry/Huddlestone
  18. Lennon
  19. Young
  20. A. Johnson
  21. Crouch
  22. Defoe
  23. Bent
  24. Wright-Phillips
  25. Robinson
  26. Hart
  27. Carrick
  28. C. Cole
  29. Jagielka
  30. Walcott

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green; Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock; Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips; Forwards: Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

I went for Richards. If I'd thought Carragher was definitely available I'd have probably gone for his experience and dependability myself.
I chose 4 goalkeepers incase one needed to withdraw before 1st July for whatever reason. Capello has decided on a third leftback instead, which must raise concerns for Baines.
I opted for Jagielka over King on fitness grounds.
I put Carlton Cole in ahead of Heskey, as the Villa man can't even get in his club side.
Finally, I gave Ashley Young the nod over Tom Huddlestone. Barry, Parker and Carragher will provide enough cover in the anchor role.

From Capello's squad, the seven players that wouldn't make the cut for me are: Warnock, Dawson, Huddlestone, Carrick, A. Johnson, J. Cole, Bent. I think that Huddlestone's place is dependent on Barry's fitness. Adam Johnson needs to oust Lennon. Bent will need to prove that he can make the step up and fit in with the team pattern to displace Heskey. Joe Cole and Theo Walcott will both want to demonstrate their sharpness. Dawson could make it at the expense of his teammates dodgy knee. And it will be a scrap between the two deputy leftbacks.

Things this squad tells me.....

Capello clearly sees that we have no good English back up right back. Doesnt rate Richards (England 1st choice before he was injured). Wes Brown is injured. He's also going to take Carragher. That squad doesnt have a right back after Johnson, so he's going. Which doesnt make much sense, especially after he got bummed in the Champs League and looked like his career was over at the start of the season. He's also a centre half by trade, and with King, Dawson, Upson all ahead of him IMO - Carragher has been brought in for right back.

Personally, if he's going that way ie older, experienced players....Gary Neville should've been picked. Why put 3 left backs in and only 1 right back? Carragher will go, which I dont really understand especially when Neville has surprisingly performed in bigger games and done well.

Screams of panic IMO. Scott Parker, Carragher, and trying to get Scholes back? Player he hasnt even considered for friendlies or qualifiers? Clear sign he doesnt rate certain players such as Shawcross, Gary Cahill etc. Scottie Parker is a good shout cos he'll give 120% all game...but wont go but would be good if he did if Barry aint fit...which I think he will be.

Wouldnt take Adam Johnson. Joe Cole, Milner, Gerrard, Lennon, Walcott, are the wingers for me. Milner is your midfield utilitly player too.

He also not 100% on Baines...why put Warnock in if he was?

I'd also take all 5 of those strikers.

Bit weird overall.

You could say it's quite a shrewd move really bringing the oldies back. Carragher is as comfortable at rightback as centreback and has been playing week in, week out at the highest level for years. Having him in the squad may mean that he can drop one of the backup centrebacks and create a space for a more adventurous player. The only option Capello really had was Richards, who comes across as a big time charlie and doesn't play every week for City.

Fergie has reinvented Scholes as a quarterback, a role that was intended for Beckham in the England squad, spraying the ball around. I'm not 100% convinced myself. I think you need a player who can tackle and impose themselves in that position and lay a simple ball off to Gerrard or Lampard. I think that Barry's form has been poor this season and that Parker could be a revelation there, as Butt and Hargreaves have been in previous tournaments. They've also experimented with King shielding the defence, although his fitness still concerns me.

I would take Adam Johnson as he can play on either the left or the right. We're limiting ourselves if we take both Lennon and Wright-Phillips.
