World Snooker Championship

Reckon Selby will get to 8 worlds before Ronnie does you know

5 if he wins this year which I think he will
If he can win the fifth, yup - it's on. But, in classic Selby style, we are a looooonnnng way from that yet. Every match is a war of attrition. It requires incredible mental stamina. So, I doubt he's thinking beyond the next ball in the current frame, let alone a final at the weekend, or an eighth title in the year 2525.

Interestingly, though, if he does somehow win the fifth this year, that would be five titles in 10 years. For comparison, Hendry did 7 in 10 in the much less competitive 90s, and Davis did 6 in 9 in the 80s.

That said, we're miles away from that yet. John Higgins is still to be beaten and there's no easy match from here, even if Selby has developed the aura of Darth Vader in the one-table set-up at the Crucible.

Best match ever was Ronnie 14-16 down in the semis against Darth Vader and snatching victory.
Selby is a likeable lad, but god he makes it boring.

Ronnie's greatest victory, in my opinion. Even Superman was powerless against his kryptonite, but Ronnie found something against his own.

John Higgins used be Ronnie's nemesis - but he seems to have accepted his place in history now, albeit reluctantly. Though let's not write him off just yet...

Selby, though, is one of the greatest players of all-time - and I don't think he's playing for second. He doesn't get the credit because of his methodical, mentally impervious style. But he is an unbelievable player. He recognises Ronnie's greatness, but he licks his lips at the challenge Ronnie presents. Hard as nails.

Love watching Selby on form - has the complete game for the crucible, unbreakable. Out of form he's more of a tester - proper spoiler and quite disingenuous with it. Taking charge now against Higgins.

Hope he wins a few more world titles - has the game to and then some, just whether he can find that mental equilibrium. Clearly puts himself under enormous pressure.

He has a very strange mentality. I can’t help think that a lot of it is constructed from the point of view of disrupting his opponent as much as it being his natural style.

On the other hand he seems to almost revel in his particular brand of misery, so who knows.

Can’t say he’s a great example for the sport though.
