Worst aspects of modern football

And it's not even remotely modern, hence why i said it. 3 points a much better idea anyway, it was mooted in the 1960s and they finally got round to it in the 80s. over 10 years before the premier league.
It's currently 3 points for a win. So in modern football it's 3 points for a win. The thread asks about the worst concepts of modern football. I feel that 3 points is one of them, hence why I've added it in this thread

We have different interpretations of what this thread is about then. Mine is modern things that didn't used to exist until recent times (like VAR and various rule changes). I suppose 'goal nets' is just as valid to you.

The absolute obsession with just the big clubs.

Everything is just the same old clubs over and over again. Its utterly tedious.

I hate how it has basically decimated football in some nations. Back in the day you had great clubs like Red Star Belgrade, Honved, Dynamo Tbilisi, Club Brugge, IFK Goteborg, Marseille, Steaua Bucharest, Hamburg, CSKA Sofia etc. It means nothing anymore.

It's ramped up even more lately though as everything online seems to be just about 5-6 clubs. It's crap.

Absolutely this.

its nothing more than branding by media companies to flog to the armchair. its turned a sport into a borefest for most fans I'm sure. certainly me.

My interpretation is literally the thread title, but moving on to your last point;

Yes. If I thought they were detrimental to the modern game. However I actually find them quite useful.

It's funny you should mention goal nets. Not a fan of the current rectangular ones. Much prefer the triangular looking ones. But that's just aesthetics really.

It's almost like everyone will have different opinions and views, and this a forum to share and express them.

Good call. There was a time when facing an 'eastern-bloc' team (for example) meant a very possible exit from European competition.

Genuinely stealing oxygen.

  • Endless promotion of gambling.
  • Supposed professional referees conveniently missing crucial decisions that would benefit smaller teams (see non-penalty decision against United at the weekend, just horrendous).
  • 'Fashion' of footballers nowadays and how players have in themselves become brands, even crap players like Lingard.
  • The sheer fact that these young men literally cannot spend the money they are given.
  • Agents.

It can all be traced to money. That's what has ultimately ruined football.
Money has always been in football, but I'd say the seismic shift caused by the introduction of the PL multiplied the problem time and time again.

For those of us who remember the old First Division, is football any better? The PL brand is better, which helps the wealth of the power people, but not for fans.

We have owners out there purely to turn over a profit by squeezing the clubs, grotesque wages of players and the need to make as much out of merchandise.

God yes its horrific.

It has started to creep into women's football too! Ever since Barca became good actually. Bunch of random types from far flung corners of the globe trying to mock someone for following a "small" women's team ffs!

It's utterly grim.

Only in the way things tend to be when you look back on them.

I honestly get what you're saying about money. And as a concept it is very useful and simple. But my god do I hate it, and the way it controls everything. Worst of all, we've reached a point in society we're it's not actually needed. Except as way to keep the powerful in power, and there in lies the problem.

The entertainment was better back then. Any season you could get a Norwich, Southampton, West Ham etc challenging for the title. Every club seemed to have an icon too. A player everyone else would have but they stayed at their club for years. Nothing means anything any more.

I hate seeing two top flight clubs playing and the team facing City or whoever is like 16-1 to win and treated like a giant killer if they get a result. I remember our greatest ever team getting humped 4-1 by Coventry, or the RS always getting battered by QPR or Southampton. Of course results like this can still happen but it's done with minimum possession and a fluke goal etc.

Some great points in here. I'd like to add 3 points for a win too. Absolutely noting wrong with 2.

Sky, BBC etc, wouldn't be prioritising/kiss arsing/only really bothering with, the clubs with bigger fan bases, if there wasn't any revenue to be made from the clicks, viewership etc.

Also, footballers really do not need to be on anymore than £100k a year. And even that is pushing it.
There very much were issues with two imo

Absolutely assassinated Marseille here who are still quite good at times
