Would five at the back help defensively?

Would five at the back help us keep goals conceded down?

No it would make things worse because it's our weakest area, the team are not coached properly in defensive terms, or overall terms, inviting pressure on the defence by playing 5 at the back would mean we just concede even more chances, Dyche does not like his full backs to prevent crosses, he did the same thing at burnley, and he's doing it here, so we'd bypass the midfielders which are usually the only people who win the ball back for us.

Changing the manager would help, massively.

I keep waking up in the night having nightmares about our options in defence
Patterson
Young
Mykelenko
Keane
Tarkowski
Branthwaite
Godfrey

Only 2 of the above are half decent (Tarkowski and Branthwaite)
And that's without the other liability that is Holgate
Absolutely frightening
Coleman back at some stage and Garner is a midfielder
Nightmare

Our defenders are not that great but there again neither are many in the premier league. We need a holding midfield who is prepared to just sit in front of the back 4 and cover that area, as well as covering for the full backs. That would include standing on the edge of the box when we're defending corners. We need a Carsley type player. Maybe Gueye could cover that roll but he seems to want to go forward more.

Never been a fan of us playing five at the back, except for a brief period under Ancelotti (around the time we won the derby). Think we'd lose too much in midfield, leaving us exposed there.

Full-backs need to utilise the length of the pitch better too, their failure to do so is costing us in games.

One of the supposed holding midfielders actually holding might be more useful. First goal doesn't happen to 95% of teams as the knock back is not available.
Problem is we don't have a holding midfielder at the club
Gana, Dacoure & Onana are not holding midfielders.

We havnt had anyone play that role properly since Barry

Think the only way we'd get away with it is if we utilise Garner & Young as the wingbacks. Don't think Patterson is quite cut out for a wingback role yet, ditto Mykolenko.

Young last played wing back about 3-4 years ago.

Huge ask at 38 and realistically it would just become a back 5 otherwise they'd be caught up the field too often given how scattergun the passing can be from central midfield.
