Wrong era?

Chatting to my dad last night and he said "that Osman just isn't quick enough for today's game, but if he'd have been around in the 60s or 70s he'd have been up there with Ball and Kendall".

Makes you think who else we have that are just the wrong era?

Ferguson might have been better suited to the inter-war period maybe?

Anichebe to the game in 2040 or whenever it finally becomes non-contact?

Osman's finishing - for an attacking midfielder - is quite frankly embarrassing. The amount of time we've seen him pea-roll the ball to the goalkeeper has been unbelievable, as if his body has no strength and he is unable to generate any sort of power on his shots. If he could have added that to his game I think he'd have been a good shout for England over the years.

Speed doesnt stop Pirlo being one of the best around.
Pirlo's range of passing makes a huge difference. Years ago Pirlo was playing as "10" and because of being slow and not so good when operating in tight spaces he was pushed back to deep playmaking role, where it's easier for him to find space.

Isn't that similar to the transition made by Osman this season?

Osman is a good player for us, he has the odd bad game here and there but overall it's right that he's been called up into the England squad.

Osman is perfectly fine now, he's mucked in against the likes of Essien, Touré (think his tracking back and slide tackle in 2011) and Viera without coming off as you think he would, lads certainly got his deficiencies but he can play.

Don't by the "he'd be brilliant in Spain/Italy/Germany" ideas, he'd be hauled off over there after 15 minutes for launching the ball up to the centre-forward that happens to be a forward-lying centre back.

I've always thought the same about Tony Hibbert. In years gone by when the full backs job was to mark a winger and nothing else Hibbert would have got 40+ caps for England.

I was waiting for the first mention of Hibbo lol.

It's not easy comparing different periods in football. Don't think Osman would be a world beater in any period though tbh, he lacks a good shot and can go missing at vital intervals. When he's on his game though, he can be brilliant; shame we haven't got to see it more often down the years tbh, although that's in some ways down to Moyes' insistence that he be played out wide rather than centrally.

Pirlo has always been a central midfielder, ALWAYS. He might be a bit further back now mind.

Pace has nothing to do with it, Osman is a cracking footballer. His problem has been consistency, fitness (in the past), and his piss poor finishing.

He has had a great career, Prem footballer for 10 years, England International, played in Europe. Very good career.

There is no way that Osman would have been better suited playing the game in the 70's, the leather casey would have knocked him out / knocked him over / broke all his metatarsals (not that anyone knew what the **** they were then), they'd have to send the groundsman on (nevermind the sponge man) to dig him out of the mud .. and with his swarthy looks he'd have been dubbed the 'other but **** Treblecock'.
