the u.k. should be thankful that tariffs were applied and so is under a similar cosh to those the u.k. will later rely on for support and cross border markets.

Late 70s, at college, a casual conversation, and a tutor tells me this. Whenever an economy needs restarting a war is used to 're-set' it.
It isn't a complicated notion, but as we age we see the clarity in it, how it works and how much of a light it shines on the basis for western capitalism and its profit machine economy.
Everything falls under this umbrella.
