So funny thing about that 5-4 Levante game everyone talks about. Watching the goals, he wasnt actually at fault for any of the 5 goals. Not to say he had a great game, but the goals break down as:
1. Chases defender around edge of box to goalline, #2 is actually in far better position to defend, but for some reason makes no attempt to get in and block it, and the two defenders and keeper somehow also let it through. There were basically 5 players in better position to defend and more responsible. Responsible for goal score 2/10.
2. Mina is stepping back up to the line after covering a runner who is now offside, RB is equal. As the midfielder dribbles up, the player nearby seems to have it covered, but for some reason #5 standing RIGHT NEXT to the striker in the middle steps up as well, right as he does the midfielders passes it through and the striker is in on goal. The RB is also in position to stop it, but gets knocked over a second later. So again, Mina is not the closest defender and not with primary responsibility. Now he was the 2nd closest, but the runner who is coming back to an onside position would then be right in the middle of the goal and unmarked if Mina had slid further inside. Responsible for goal score 2/10
3. Mina is covering a runner who just made a run down the sideline, as the LB has pushed up on the ball and is no longer covering that side(similar to Silvas tactics interestingly). Barcelona have 2 defenders beyond him to cover 2 players, and Rakitic is in the middle with another player. Right as Mina runs to cover, the midfielder by Rakitic makes a run into that space, and Rakitic is caught out too far behind. Mina can in no way make up the ground, and as Pique comes over, its now turned into a 3 on 2 as Rakitic is trailing. The 3rd player trailing gets the pass, which again Rakitic could stop but hes too lazy and a good shot ends it. Responsible for goal score 1/10
4. Mina is the last man back marking the right-middle striker, as the balls is launched forward. Sadly, its a 3 on 3 as the midfielders for Barcelona have made no attempt to get back, and it actually looks like it pings off of Piques head. The problem with this being a 3 on 3 is the 3rd defender is actually the LB on the far side of the field both double marking Mina's guy, and behind him so not actually useful. #22 for Levante has literally just run up the left side of the field without a single midfielder or the RB marking him, or indeed actually within 10 yards of him. The header bounces to him and now its a 2 on 1 with Mina in the middle, right as Mina moves over to the ball carrier he passes it to the other guy with an excellent pass and he scores. Responsible for goal score 1/10.
5. Mina is back defending 2 attackers with Pique and the RB, so they have numbers. Pique steps on the ballcarrier, while both the RB and Mina check the run of the other striker. Mina steps up at just the right time, once the striker runs off side to pressure the ball. Unfortunately, three problems happen. One, Levante have another runner from the midfield arriving late, on the right side. Two, #5 who is marking him is both behind him, and slows down as he gets to the last line of defense letting him run in. Three, Mina gets nutmegged with the pass. Ill give him more responsibility in this one just because while it wasnt mainly his fault, he could have gotten to it and caught it out with his foot in the right place at the right time. Responsible for goal score 3/10
Common theme? Really poor midfield play. Goal #1 was the only one where a defender misplayed something badly, and every goal was on the break for Levante. On this play primary fault lies with Semedo who was in the best position and for some reason made no attempt to either contest the player or the ball across. Mina just isnt fast enough to cover a quick player straight to the endline, and he slowed up once he saw Semedo in position. Semedo had a poor season and played less than half of the matches. The others were primarily the fault of Busquets, with some Rakitic thrown in. Rakitic was just lazy and didnt follow his man leading to an odd man rush on #3, and Busquets was at fault for #2 and #5. Im not sure who to even fault for #4 because the runner was so wide open that it was an easy 2 on 1 for Levante. Interestingly, what I didnt see was Mina in position to block something and just not try, or get pushed over, or mishit, or let a ball run by him outside of the nutmeg from close range. Im not saying hes going to work out, but just because a team gives up 5 goals doesnt even actually mean its the defenders fault. Midfielders gotta play too. We have seen how big of an impact Schneiderlin has on our goals conceded.
