Keane is a competent passing defender.

Agreed. Keane has put through a few cracking balls this year. Actual through balls in behind the defence - one in behind to Coleman against Brighton we almost scored from if I recall.

Mina wasn't quite as ambitious with his passing but it is much more difficult against a team like Chelsea who press hard from the front. Great to see he had such high accuracy against a team like that as it shows he's composed. Hopefully he can show a bit more of his passing range as he will be under less pressure against Cardiff. After watching Jags diagonal punts out of play and Williams looking up with the ball at his feet like a heavy set deer in the headlights last year, it is refreshing that Keane, Zouma and Mina are all comfortable on the ball and can pick a pass.

Just watched that, number of times he retained possession and started off a forward move was impressive, pretty much a dozen times at least if it was jags, Williams etc that would have been launched aimlessly 60y downfield to no one.

Interesting to see the short passes into the CMs.

Makes you think, if we had a deep playmaker there then instead of passing to Gana and the ball coming back to him / Pickford it would be a simple transition forward.

That would make no sense whatsoever as Gana is so pivotal to the way the team is set up.Its allows Gomes to pretty much play anywhere. The 2 are so suited together it would be nutz to change it.
Anyway Gomes often drops deep to receive the ball , things are fine in that area of the pitch.

He has a Pogba vibe about him which the Goodison Boo Boys will find delightful.

He needs to be pushed and having Zouma and Keane, he will be. He is a guaranteed first team starter but he has a very big couple of games coming in a short period which I hope he steps up too.
