2018/19 Yerry Mina

I’ve liked what I’ve seen before today Eggs, hopefully it’s down to him being played in a 3. What was disappointing about today was none of those 3 centre half’s took it upon themselves to show some leadership and try and sort it out.

The lads still pretty inexperienced outside of South America and international footy. Don't think Barca will have ever played him in a 3 so wouldn't shock me if that's the first time he's ever played in it at any decent level of opposition, just in general looked a confusion at the back on who needed to be going what, Coleman didn't help either by tooling in tight to Keane ridiculously at times given sane half the park to himself.

As a club we just never seem to play it well, felt like today was almost a experiment to see it in action in a game we realistically had little chance going into it of getting anything.

Only one of the back 5 who played well was Digne today, Zouma did okay when pushed to rb, but all three cbs and Coleman stunk the gaff out most of the game.

..I agree, Lou. I’ve been impressed too. I just hope Silva isn’t changing formation so he doesn’t have to leave one out. I’m sure he wants to pair Zouma/Mina but Keane has thrown a spanner in the works.

Actually part of me thinks the formation today was an experiment as I just said previous post, other part of me thinks maybe Silva didn't trust Coleman again at Sane without a CB closer to help out...

Be interesting if Seamus gets the start next week - u suspect we could see him rested.

..actually thought he was very composed in his last game given he got an early booking. Bit of a surprise today to see him react like that when their keeper picked him up off the floor. His all around game was poor today, not sure he’s played in a combination of 3 CBs before.

Just frustration from playing a bad game I think. His Coming together was hardly worse than what richarlison got red for though.

I think a lot depends on the personnel. I know Gary Neville has spoken a lot about how much thought Venables gave it in 96. He had Pearce and Neville playing outside of Adams. Each player fitted what was needed. Pearce and Neville were both very comfortable being in wide areas which is requires. At times there's a lazy attempt to just throw traditional centre halves into the outside positions of a 3 which is a bit lazy. It doesn't really help anyone.

It's odd, there was a time when we had Mori one side, Holgate the other and Jags playing in between them under Koeman and we actually looked happy with it. Holgate is probably a very natural right centre back in a 3. I'm not sure he's quite right in a 2 but has always impressed me in a 3 with his distribution and the emphasis on speed as opposed to strength the role requires. But other than that it's not worked as we haven't really had the personnel.

I was surprised Keane played in the middle really. I thought Mina would be the obvious choice as he is the most dominant. Zoom could also go there as he's the quickest so it was odd Keane went in there. That being said it looked what it was today, namely 3 lads who are not comfortable playing in the outside role of a back 3 and 3 lads who are well drilled playing in a back 4 not knowing what their roles were today and thus allowing a side with excellent movement to exploit the spaces between them.

It happens. It was probably a great game to experiment in for Silva. It's a free hit really and had it come off and all 3 played to their best we may well have avoided conceding today. We'd also pose far more threat of set pieces which is a big (and perhaps only) weakness of City. Lesson learnt today though and I hope we don't see it with those 3 again.

As a slight digression it will be interesting who plays in the 2 going forward. If Silva was to keep Zouma I think he may get a run now.

Typically in a three you play your least mobile CB as the central defender, hence Keane being chosen there. Your outside CBs have to go out and defend 1v1 if the opposition counter attack into the space left by the wing back. You wouldn't want Keane out there.

An absolute walking red card too. Twice I've noticed him now sticking his head into players, was very lucky Ederson made absolutely nothing if it yesterday.

A lot of adapting to be done for sure, but no reason to suggest that couldn't happen.

Totally agree, I said the same in the match, that first critical goal may have never come about if mina was in the centre as well. Maybe he just went for the more experienced option to Marshall the 3. Imo though, mina has all the characteristics of a leader, he's shown that by rallying the troops like at Watford even though he's only played a couple of games. I think he'll do fine here, he'll have shaky games like yesterday to start with, but we have to persist with him. Interesting to see if Zouma starts the next game at right back. The one thing Silva has given us that other managers haven't, he's quickly recognising when our players are out of form.

Yeah this is true, it is a massive indicator of how soft our league is though. I mean something like richy's red card for violent attempt is still absurd to me.

I personally think Keane and Zouma is the best combination perhaps jags in with one of them could also work. Not sure Mina is quite of the required standard, he's been caught out a few times so far at times I wouldn't expect Zouma to so not sure why he's getting in ahead of him

I pains me to say but Jags is done. Great servant for us but essential we move forward.

I agree that Zouma and Keane look to be the solution... For now.
