Youngsters

two of our youngsters are close to fighting for a place in our first squad. At first I was very happy by those news, until I read the end of it and learned why. Not quite the reason I want to see for a young player to get his first bows in the First team.

Make or break

I agree that pushing these youngsters in to the first team might be expecting too much but with the new midfield they could flourish. Last season VA and JV did better than they were expected to and JV especially has befitted from last season. With Arteta, Pienaar and maybe Lucho( I can dream) the new boys could be getting really good service . If they succeed this could save us millions in the long run. The lad from Swindon is supposed to be a natural finisher.(When was the last time we had one of those). I have been really frustrated with DM/BK/KW etc for the lack of activity but seeing youth coming through is far more satisfying. Remember seeing JV become the youngest scorer..........Who was it he beat???:)

If we dont make any more signings then im certain we'll see both those players in the first team this year. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but it will be if we're forced to play them through injuries.

"Lukas got on the pitch because there wasn't anybody else."

irvine sure does have a way with words!! lol!

vaughan got a look in 04-05
vic got his first game 05-06

they both played 06-07

neither 'came through' last season, they had been around the first team and had got top flight games in seasons before.

please, dont expect any marvels to come through in the coming season, its unrealistic expectation and puts undue pressure on what are youth players.

Agreed. That's why I wasn't thrilled with what he stated in the end as the reason for Vidarsson and Lukas might get first team action. If it just was down to their abilities that's one thing.. but mainly due to lack of numbers? That's not as reassuring, at least not for me.

As far as I know the only ones who have potential to make it to the first team are:

Boyle - hope we see more of him this year, although signing Baines suggests he's not near the first team yet.
Vidarsson - This lad is the one I reckon will make it. According to my mates he's a good offensive midfielder with an eye for goal.
Kissock - Lots of hype, if he lives up to it then he could be one to watch. Bit Osman like with his physique so might be a problem.
Swindon kid - Too early to say, a loan might benefit him this season.

Anymore, from experience?

boyle and baines will be the LB squad rotation peeps for years to come.

i havnt been so impressed with vidarsson - seen him play twice 'in the flesh' didnt stand out.

kissock is a little bit small, but his ability, passing and creativity have meant he has been the player that has stood out

no idea on lukas.

whats interesting this season is where the reserve games are being played.

I won't dwell too much on this but it does frustrate me this English attitude with a players size. Is Leo Messi too small? Tevez? It's this strength and stamina approach to youth football that has probably contributed most to our failure to win bugger all over the past 40 years.

As for Lukas and Vidarrson, both have played league football last season so why can't they step up? Beckham started playing for United after half a dozen games at Preston. Look how well some of the Arsenal youngsters have done. I don't think anyone is expecting them to take starring roles this term but there's no reason why they can't contribute as squad players.

Bruce, unfortunately size does come into it unless your exceptional like the players you have mentioned there. Naturally I would be happy if Kissock was exceptional but if he is not then he is going to twatted all over the place, ie Osman.

If he as good as people say then his class and extra touch will compensate for his lack of size. In the Premiership, size does matter. Its the most physical league in the world.

I'm not saying strength isn't a help but to say it's the be all and end all isn't the case either. Players like Hleb and Giggs can't be more than 11 stone wet through. Look at Wright-Phillips and Lennon, both very small and both established internationals. If you've got talent then it doesn't matter how big or small you are. I for one am interested to see how Osman does in Europe this season as his game should flourish in the less physical environment.
