I've seen a few Suits, good programme.

i didnt realise what midway was, i had heard it spoken amout with great reverence(sp) but its actually a really tiny plateau halfway through the pacific where the us had/have a very small airbase and runway.

technology has ruined military conquest now, there wont be the likes of nelson, napoleon, rommel, wellington, drake, and countless others.

the battle of midway was decided by a stroke of unimaginable good luck, where 4 aircraft carriers were out on manouvres out of the bay when the japs attacked. had the new sea going super weapon (carrier) been removed from the american arsenal then the japs would have steamrollered the states.

i wish i had spent more time and put more effort into history at school.

I love history. Unfortunately, I just don't have time for all of it.

Suits, you are mistaken about the Battle of Midway there, it was the Pearl Harbor attack where the Japanese missed the carriers out on maneuvers. hey pretty much decimated the battleship fleet though. Although by this point Battleships were rendered obsolete, just no Admiral in any Navy wanted to admit it.

Midway itself was a very tactical battle which the US won decisive, starting with 3 carriers versus Japans 4. Ended with the US with 2 remaining carriers and all of Japan's had been sunk, along with a heavy cruiser. Stopped Japans expansion ambitions for the Pacific, and allowed the US to go on the offensive, liberating all the previously captured territories.

i know what midway is, and at no point did i mention it housing ships.

admittedly, my point about unimaginable good luck wasnt made correctly, although midway having no bay and mentioning the japanese attack was clue enough to referance pearl harbour. the program is fresh in my mind, that the japs thought they sunk two carriers when in fact it was just the uss yorktown cv-5 that they hit twice, the crew (of the yorktown) so well trained rescued her from the initial attack, but the japs didnt know this so when they finished her off they thought it was two down.

midway - atoll not a plateau.

Oh, and while Japan did achieve strategic surprise to accomplish Pearl Harbor, it could have been avoided, if it wasn't for politicians and the people who received the report warning of the attack and discarding it as 'they'd never do that'

Ok, my bad, just we are talking about a subject I hold a great interest in and I wanted yto make sure everybody was on the same page :)

heres one for you, did roosevelt know enough about the promise of the bomb so that the 'germany first' priority would guarantee support for deployment of the most powerful weapon ever used.

i was a little blunt, sometimes i get ahead of myself, especially as my typing is well below par.

i really want to find this show, it is deserving of another watch. i was less enthused by the story of stalingrad and the sniper offensive that was aired the week after the midway show.

I have the full box set of "The World At War"

Just showing off a bit. One of my favourite things to watch. With my Military past and my families(which is why I am so passionate when people try questioning morality and validity of past experiences, no targets intended) times gone by it has taught me exactly how little us fish actually are in the ocean of life.

All involved in war are victims one way or another, this is the unfortunate truth of life.

Back to the box set anyway. It is awesome. I recommend it to anyone.
