Cars today

On another note DPF's are the reason my next car will be a petrol.

My car has been parked up since the 3rd of February after it went into limp home mode just as i left to drive to Dublin airport for a family holiday. We just made the flight after getting a family member at late notice.

I had it at the garage 3 weeks before again in limp home mode with the DPF.

Had that happen on my vw caddy van, not a cheap fix either.
Didn’t realise when I started searching for a new car how many diesels were for sale, I would’ve preferred a petrol, but struggled to find one. We also have a ULEZ in Bristol, so needed a diesel that complied 🙄

@degsy

Make, model, year, outline of the immediate problem/s. Grasping at smoke in the other thread, no idea about anything. Early british leyland it seems, very rudimentary fuel injection system.

1981 Rover SD1 3500 SE V8 with efi... commonly called 'The Flapper Valve' system
Going by the engine number the engine was a tranplant from a Range Rover but don't quote me on that

The problem;
Starts ok cold
Runs for a bit, anywhere from 30sec to 8mins
Cuts out.
I think it's 'electrical'
There's plenty of Info on internet if you dig, too much really, I've printed out about 70 pages.
20 similar but different versions of the same problem
40 different possible solutions.
But no magic bullet
Also the fact that there might be more than one malfunctioning component.
Sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Needs a good old school diagnostic auto electrician...and they're rare...to spend time - and times money.
You never know, I might get lucky tinkering
It passes the time

Well, this is probably a start. What engine did it have originally and what engine does it have now?

With it running for a bit then giving up, breather cap, fuel injection reserve (is it pulling more fuel than it can deliver?), over heat cut out?

Can you get a carb for it and hook it up with an over head fuel res? Take the electrics out of the equation and test just the engine?

This'll isolate the problem or you could downgrade from fuel injection and run it on a carb? Where did you snag this project from and is it a first second or third hand Frankenstein creation?

Has this thing got automatic choke? Because when it slackens off it ties in with the engine dying.

@chrismpw
It doesn't have a choke system in the way I think you mean it.
As V8 it has what is sometimes called a 9th / extra or officially 'a cold start Injector' iirc this is controlled by 'simple' iirc, bi-metal thermocouple.
But to all intents and purposes here in semi tropical Queensland it never kicks in...or shouldn't
This is controlled by yet another semi electro / mechanical gubbins called the 'Thermotime valve'...which is moderated by the whatever which is all controlled by the most basic 4 map ECU think Commadore ZX Vs your iPhone 15 in modern cars.

This is some of the info that's out there, sifting through it is the hard part.
It says that the simplest way is to substitute out the suspect part with a known working part - easier said than done.
They may as well say pick one part from 10, 20, 30 think of a number and throw money at it.
The new coil might arrive today or Monday and I'll see what happens
Meanwhile I've got the brakes to play with, that will keep me busy - which is after all the object of the exercise.
