My arl fella maintains Baines is the best full back he's seen play for Everton - as far as left backs go, he says Baines > Wilson > Van Den Hauwe in that order as the best three we've had.

I think you can make a solid argument that Baines is the best player, pound for pound, that we've had in the Premier League era and he's the only player of the era you could say has a shout of being in our all time XI

….its all about opinion, Ray Wilson and Karl Schnellinger disputed discussion as to the best LB in world football in the ‘60s. Wilson played in two World Cups, playing every game in ‘62 and obviously being a central part of the team that won it in ‘66.

I’m 68 and Wilson is one of only 3 world class players I’ve seen in my life at Everton. There’s nobody even close to Wilson being the best LB in Everton’s history. This discussion is about 2nd best and I’d have VdH. As much as I rated Baines he wouldn’t even make my subs bench.

We're the other two Alan Ball and Neville Southall Eggs ? If so I agree, never saw enough of Ray Wilson so can't judge him, same with Alex Young.

….yep. My definition is good enough to play in any team on the planet at the time they played for Everton, Ball, Wilson and Southall.

Young was sublime, look at this goal with Nobby Stiles trying to wipe him out (by the way, look at the confidence Ray Wilson has in stopping the ball taking a stride back with Bobby Charlton in front of him, then picking out the pass to Royle);

Possibly my favourite Everton goal, any excuse to show it, United won the European Cup not long after this;

Would have Pejic above Baines as well.
Class player , hard as nails and brilliant with Davies thomas,
what a combination that was with Latch in the middle.
Only for not having a goalkeeper worth the name they would have won something that team.
Baines will get more votes as more people on here have seen him.

Pat van damme... just because we're too soft as a team atm, and have been for a while.
That said good to see alcaraz backing his new team mate's a few weeks ago

Noting to be unsure about Egss wilsons in
Ray Wilson was just getting past his best when he joined us, but better left back than the pair of them - His England internationals prove that ......back then, contract wise it was hard to leave a 2nd division club like Huddlesfield where he started as a left-winger converted into a world-class left back ....

He regretted signing a long deal with them before joining us as a great left back defensively brilliant & great at overlapping too .... he was an immaculate left back ..... Baines the next best ......
International records says it all he was the best left back I have seen at our club - only for that binding contract the Catt would have had him much earlier = he was world-class at left back - the other two were very very good ....

Pat better defender and can play centre back .
Better footballer than he was given credit for he just wasn't a thug.
Liked Baines but would have Pat. all day long
Far from a thug and again as you say much underrated .

My only issue is we’re talking about players in a modern Everton side in the premier league , like Reidy I think pat would find current rule enforcement a Challenge

….this is what I don’t really get with his reputation, I just don’t remember him clogging anybody. I was at West Brom when he got sent-off for shoulder charging the winger off the pitch but you’d never see him go over the top on an opposition player.

The psycho tag was lots to do with off the pitch hard man image. Gray and Sharp would wind him up. I’ve actually just come in from being in the players tunnel at Goodison and the weird thing I remembered was him wanting to sort the big player Luton had at the time but it was only because his mates were winding him up.

Did he actually get many red cards for us, I don’t even know?
Was the Luton player Mick Hartford? Big gronk of a forward.

You mustn't have seen that semi final against Luton Eggs.. Can't think of their wingers name, but he led our defence a merry dance in the first half, until pat caught him slightly high, under his chin !
No seriously top of the knee with an acrobatic swipe of his boot, that winger wasn't involved much in the game after that. He had this way if the ball was played behind him, then Pat used to run backwards staring straight into the eyes of the speedy winger, who suddenly lost his pace and the ball would just roll out of play. Know what I've changed my mind Van den hawe for me had everything, tall and intimidating to say the least. But it's an excellent choice between the two, not much in it for me. I was too young to have saw Ray Wilson, Tommy Wright was an excellent fullback too.
Brian Stein? Or was he too recent. Tricky winger who used to score a few for Luton.

I'll have the hybrid. Pats defending. Baines ability going forward.
Its a decent question actually. Very hard to go against Pat for obvious reasons but Baines is possibly the best left back in my time watching Everton.

Not for me, good that he was, Hinchcliffe was a great crossed of the ball especially off corners, Signs was good too but never saw Wilson but Van Den Hauwe and Baines were the best two i saw.
