Sell to Improve??

A top 6 club should not be selling it's best players - especially with the amount of money coming into the club via TV deals etc.

The team doesn't need wholesale changes - we just need to keep our best players, make 2 or 3 good additions with the funds we do have and continue to develop our own youth players

We should only be selling players if :-

  • They're not good enough
  • They're good, but don't fit into our system
  • They're good, fit into our system, but we have a ready made replacement
  • We get a silly offer for them
On those criteria, the only one of Baines, Coleman and Jagielka you could possibly countenance selling is Baines, because Oveido looks good enough to replace him. But Baines has just signed a new contract and Oveido might not come back as good after his broken leg. so it's a no from me.

We wouldn't get massive money for Jags and he certainly doesn't want to leave so that's just not going to happen. We have no-one approaching Coleman's talent at right-back so unless a silly offer comes in then he's going nowhere.

In fairness nearly every thread on here is hyothetical, have we bid for Bony, Batsuhyai, Lukaku.... As i said it's silly season, and i was just posing a scenario. Don't hate me:p

They're not hypotheticals, they're fiction!

No one hates you mate, I just think this attitude is indicative of the cretinous effect of Kenwrong. We believe we're a small, selling club down to our very core.

We don't have to be.

Most sides outside the top 4 sell there best players when a big club come in for them and offer big money

We don't sell our players as soon as they're good, which is what you quoted.... We've kept hold of Jagielka and Baines before despite interest so clearly we don't.

Bit of a difference between selling Fellaini for £27m or Lescott for £20m, and selling Coleman, Jags, and Baines in one go.

We're in a new era now with the mega bucks tv money. Smart clubs that don't waste it don't need to sell.

Ask Spurs if selling big improves your team!
With the money that's now coming into the Prem the only reason to sell is the greed of the owners.
A good manager should shine in the market today..and Martinez is a good manager

We're not selling anyone this summer. We need to expand the squad and build on what we have. We are not far away at all from not only getting into the top 4 but actually challenging. The points gap between us and the title winners last season was the smallest it has been for 27 years, actually since we last won the league in 1986/87.

There is no need to sell, the AGM revealed that the clubs debt has dropped substantially. The new tv deal has been a massive boone to the club. The players are very happy at the club. Baines himself committed himself to the club when he could have gone elsewhere. Barkley told Martinez that he loved playing for Everton (Martinez said this himself). The players realise they are at the greatest club in the world and don't want to leave.

We've got something special going on. Don't be fooled by a biased agenda-driven media that don't want 2 teams from Liverpool challenging and try to portray us as a certain way, using tired untrue stereotypes about us. We're not plucky Everton anymore, we are EVERTON FOOTBALL CLUB, the team that has won more than twice as many titles as the likes of City. The club with a better youth system and academy than any club in the country as well. We have a big future as well as a glorious past.

We'll win things under Martinez, given time and patience. That doesn't involve selling the foundations of the team.

Its true that you need to be selling players before they hit a downward spiral. However there needs to be a top young player able to come in and take their place and ideally cash left over to strengthen another position.

Baines -- Oviedo and Garbutt are competing with him and in the case of garbutt he needs gametime at his age. However if baines can do well in defensive midfield then he has another 5 years left in him. Do you keep him or sell for 20mil--tricky one.

Jagielka -- Need to keep him now as the club captain and distin is getting on. Also helps stones behind the scenes. Time to sell him was last season if at all.

Coleman -- No chance for a couple of seasons at least. Kenny will come through and push him which is when there will be a decision to make.

Why bother buying players for cheap who we think will be really good if we're just going to sell them once they're actually good. It's a never ending cycle of pointlessness. May as well shut the club down.

Arsenal this.

The reason they hadn't won anything in 8 years before last week is because they have a load of good potential, then replace them with potential before they've reached their prime. And the cycle continues.

Let's just keep our best players. We'll have this discussion when we've got the title wrapped up next season.

The key is to sell them after their peak if a top player is coming through.

For example Leeds offloaded martyn due to robinson. If Garbutt is good enough then makes sense for baines to be moved on for big money --however likelier he will switch to def mid.

Absolutely nailed it there.

To be honest, we could close the thread at this point because you the OP won't get a better answer. The time to sell your top players is when they're just past their peak but it's not obvious that they are and you have a younger, keener replacement in the squad already.

Oh Christ, I've just agreed with Zatara. My credibility is now at an all time low.

In general, spot on. But Garbutt isn't ready to be first choice left back yet. Chances are he won't be for a couple of seasons yet ( if at all ).
