The best he could do is appoint someone who does well enough to be poached in two years. Our curse is he'll probably appoint someone who will be sackable in 12 months.

The manager is almost incidental in modern football. It's whether the club can pony up the dosh to attract good players. I am now, finally, at the stage where I don't think it matters who we appoint. It's an ego-boost and a status symbol when we appoint someone like Carlo, but if he leaves that's all it was. A temporary moment of self-aggrandisement.

Moyes and his ilk will do their best, no doubt, but I think people need to disabuse themselves that a fella like that will have us winning matches at the top clubs. We need something different to do that - but the different types tend to come with other risks.

It's telling that most of the most exciting moments in the recent history of Everton have come off the field in summer transfer windows and close seasons.
