I dont think its harsh at all. If he was so in love with Everton, he couldve run his massive contract down earlier and returned to actually help the club. Insted he only returned when he wasnt good enough to play PL football anymore and was tossed out of manure - cause he knew he could always suckle some money out of blue Bills sentimental teets.

Its probably obvious, but i dont like him, and i think Evertonians being all proud about his accomplishments makes us feel super small time. He didnt do anything for Everton, but go for an ok sum when we needed the money, and taunt us after scoring against us. Him being discussed as a legend for our club is spitting on great players that gave their all for Everton. Its borderline offensive.

Edit:
He wasnt decent when he came back, he was absolutely slug-like in his movements.
Absolutely bang on mate.

Players I’ve seen that have been class are Trevor Steven, Kevin Sheedy, Peter Reid, Sharp, Gray and Big Nev. Well the whole team really.
Also Kenchelskis, James Rodriguez (never saw him in the flesh) to name a few but not Rooney.
I think he should have been world class but Fergie played it out of him. If he stayed he would have been but he’s a manc.

What has he ever done for Everton Football Club to be considered an Everton Legend?
Saved us from going bankrupt might be one reason, the very best young player ever to be produced by the club is another, only two years goes against him but the club (Kenwright) sold him before he wanted to go.

Not questioning his talent. He was world class. Also not holding him joining Man Utd against him. Didn't like his antics after that as a Man Utd player, but appreciate it wasn't all down to him. But in the end legends are made on that green pitch. Rooney didn't do that in our royal blue shirt.

He’s a legend who came through Everton but not an Everton legend. I don’t blame him for moving, and I like that he still loves the club and encourages his kids to do so.

I wish it were different, but had he stayed that year he would have still gone in a year or two.

Is that worthy of legendary status ?

You could argue that Antony Gordon saved us from bankruptcy but that in no way that rat faced bell is a legend.

Rooney was a world class player…..just for another club

We are a footnote in his career and he is a blip on our history.

I cant get my head around people even contemplating him being an Everton legend. He didn't even score a derby goal let alone win anything with us. (He actually might of scored one in his second time around? I try not to think about that era too much.)

He is no more of an Everton legend that Samuel Eto'o, both great players, or Alan Stubbs, both Evertonians.

He might be the best player most of us have seen though!

While playing for Everton? He was BIG news when he first started playing for us, mostly because he was a man in a kids body, he was far better than anybody his age, and better than many who were more experienced. He developed past that though at United, he became a more complete player. He lost his raw edge in my opinion, but he developed well past where he was with us.

When he returned he was on the wane, so was no longer the player he was.

Ginola was a hell of a player, but not when he was with us, as was Gascoigne. I'd hold them in the same manner as Rooney, and I wouldn't have them in the conversation of 'legend'

If we are to judge players at Everton, they need to be judged on their time at Everton, which is why for me he shouldn't be judged amongst the best players we have had, nor should he be called a legend.

Don't get me wrong, Rooney was an absolutely unreal talent, I just dont think he realised his top level, which is what most judge him on, while he was with us.

Now, another maybe contentious opinion of mine, is that if Rooney had stayed with us, he'd have been better than he eventually became. He lost his rawness while at United, something I think he'd have kept with us, but that's another argument for another day.
